Hello guys and gals. First post here! I drive a '97 540i 6-speed on a daily basis, but my new job will require me to drive significantly more than I do now. And with gas over $4 (and possibly over $5 by summer's end) I want to hedge my bets with an EG.
I've found a DX EG locally with a blown motor and a manual trans for $1000. I'd really like a VX or HX, but they're exceedingly rare and those that do exist are already overpriced.
I was thinking about swapping in a D15Z1 into this car, but wasn't sure how well it would work out. Mechanically (will the Z1 bolt up and work with the DX manual trans)? Electrically (will the VTEC-E be actuated properly, etc)? How will fuel efficiency compare with a real VX? I'm pretty mechanically inclined and have many technician friends (they all work at various German-brand dealerships in the area).
My goal is a high-effciency commuter that handles VERY well and is quiet enough to be able to comfortably use the phone/GPS and listen to music in.
