did it even try to turn or click when you turned the key to start? did the lights get dim when you turned to the ignition?

Turn your interior light on. The turn your headlights on, so they're both on.

If you get a buzzing sound comming from the dash, your battery is dead or almost dead.

You would get the alternator for the block.

The battery starts the car, not the alternator. The alternator keeps the battery charged when the engine is running.

Get a $15 digital voltmeter and you can test both w/out turning a wrench.

thanks to all for the great advice all came handy i went with suspended hatch and fired the car up turned on and runnin was giving me 14 volts or so and shut it off and left the voltmeter plugged to see if something was draining my battery- nothing- then i found a loose connection on the positive terminal on the battery and fixed that, cranked but the battery volts dropped to 6 so it was my battery even though it looks like brand new- once again thanks to all for the input

That's not how you check for battery drain.

Glad you figured it out though. I had the same problem... power wire at the under hood fuse box to the alternator was not tightened all the way. Felt pretty dumb.
