#310719 Cliffs:

Girls car died.
I got a loan in my name.
Got her an '09 lx civic.
I'm ready for a "new" car.
My loan won't be paid off for 3 more years.
Looking at a loan with her bank for $10k, 3%, @ $240/month.

I wanna stay Honda/Acura but the car has to be used with less than 100k I believe and obviously $12k or less (with some money I have saved). Are bank loans worth it for a used car? Anyone have experience doing this?

#310727 I'm no expert by any means because I don't typically finance cars, I usually pay cash.

But from my limited experiences....
Not worth it if you go through their auto department to find the actual car. They buy cars and sell them to their members at a way inflated used car price but they'll promise you the world with that car to get you into it.

I've gone to used car lots, found a car I want and the salesmen gets you pre approved. Then submits like a loan request to multiple banks to find out who will approve the financing and at what rate. My last car loan the guy got us approved at a great rate with some bank idk... then 2 days later told us to scratch that, he found a better bank with lower interest that would finance us... come to find out it was one of the banks I use so it was perfect and $40 less monthly.

#310759 When I was shopping for a 10k loan @ PNC, bank said car had to be no older than 6 yrs and I think 80k mi or less. That was for buying from private party. They also have loans for qualified dealerships that are like a blank check up to a certain pre-approved amount. But can only be used at manufacturer dealerships, not small lots and couldn't be used for a private party. Kind of a PITA you gotta pick one and hope you don't find the car you want being sold by the other option.

What's wrong with the hatch?

#310787 Newer is very over rated. You pay more for less. Fix what you got and be happy not paying 300$ a month.

#310798 A/C is awesome and Love it.

I have always saved up and paid cash for a car, However If your looking at financing I got some advice for you.

1) Never go to a Bank for a Loan, Go to a Non-Profit Credit Union - This will save you a ton in Interest and Fees

2) Find what car you want see what deal the lot will give you, Always mention you want to go to your bank and see what deal they can do. They will give you a good deal to try to keep you from going. Get the best deal they can do in writing. Take that your bank/Credit Union and see what they can do. Most likely this will be a much better deal then the one from the car lot.

3) Take the car on a through test drive, Test A/C, The Radio, Freeway speeds, town speeds, Defrost, Cruise, Dash lights, everything. If something isn't working right make sure to get a discount for the hassle of fixing it later. If they dont leave the lot and on your way out they might break down and give it to you, If not go to another lot for another car. Lots of Used Honda's and Acuras out there.

4) Do not let the Dealer take you to another lot to look at a car or take your keys, title for trade in or whatever. This is a trap to keep you there. Be insistent on keeping your stuff, if they are to pushy leave and they will compromise.

5) Have Multiple cars to look at that day, If you get a good deal on the first one awesome, If not your not afraid to leave and look at another one. Also takes pressure away from wanting to get your new car right now as you have more then 1 to look at.

6) Sell your car before and come in with Cash to buy. They will always screw you over on trade in value on a early 90's civic, especially with high mileage.

7) Buy on the last weekend or last day or few days of the month. The salesmen will want to make quotas and be even more flexible to seal a deal.

Make sure to do lots of research and make sure you buy what you want to buy. Before i bought my WRX I spent 8-9months looking into what I wanted for my new Daily, Looked bewteen Maitas, Ep3's, Rx8's, 350Z's, Lexus IS300, Lexus SC300, Acura Legend's, and finally settled on the WRX Wagon. I still think I made the right choice. Only thing I would possibly replace it with would be a 2014 WRX if its cool. otherwise I will be happy with my 04.

Best advice I can give is to save up and buy your car in Cash. Saving sucks but if you tuck your money into a Free checking account or stored in a credit union and is hard to get to and you put in so much money every month as you would for a car payment you have a nest egg you can buy a new (used) car from, Fix something wrong on the EG or whatever. Get the EG in the shape so it wont fall apart, i.e. fix the cv axles, but save up what you can. You will get great deals with cash. When buying my Delsol I got 3000 off the list price and around 2000 off my WRX.

I love only having to pay insurance and not having a car payment. Nothing sucks more then having a bad ass car but you cant go out to eat, or mod it, or you loose your job and end up loosing your car and money put into it.

Good luck in your choices.
