I did something dumber once... I didn't know about the Woodruff Key having to be in the Crank Pulley. I even found the "key" (really a tiny rectangle piece of petal) on the ground when I was cleaning up.
About 6 months later I was doing about 60 mph, my battery light came on, and my engine started to vibrate. I let off the gas and a few seconds later I hear a bang up front and something hitting the underside of my car.
I thought I sent a rod through the block, but in my mirror I saw something round rolling off to the side of the road.
Stopped, popped the hood expecting to see a hole in my block, and everything looked normal! Except there were no alternator or powersteering belts. And no crank pulley! It had came loose, vibrated the belts off (setting the battery light off) and then the bolt vibrated the rest of the way out. I walked back a good 1/4 mi along the highway in rush hour looking for that damn pulley, never found it
I had to drive home with no alternator or power steering, 20+ miles on just the battery
about 1/4 mi from my house it was getting weak and the gauges stopped working. I had the radio off to save juice too. I limped it into the driveway and the battery was done.
I charged it and it lasted until the next winter- WooT for OEM Honda Batteries
