say you had a slow leak and you were driving through the desert and you see your oil pressure light come on. Dipstick is dry and there's No stores/gas stations around, cell phone is dead.
If you had a few qts of auto tranny fluid in your trunk, what would happen if you put that in your motor?
What about power steering fluid?
What if you only had vegetable oil? Would that be better than little/no oil in the motor?

beat me to this one, and in which case, I have 5 quarts in the back of my hatch right now, a bottle of coolant, and a big bottle of ps fluid. 1/2 inch torque wrench, spare coupe muffler, and a spare wheel and tire. I even have what I wiould need to detail the car too.

haha...i like that tool box
i dont think it has any of the proper lubricating properties that engine oil has so it might work for another couple miles after you cooled it down, but doubt it would go too far

Vegetable oil would work better than ATF. Simply because the AFT has an extreme thinning effect on oil and sludge, it would both clean and cause excessive wear to the engine. It wouldn't help the condition of the various seals and o-rings within the engine either.
Vegetable based oil (Castor oil), was used in the WW1 era radial aircraft engines, and in the automobiles used in that era as well.
Basically, whichever you use, you had better be ready to rebuild your engine when you get home...

You'd have to driveat least three hours from any major city to get to a desert in Texas.
