A little late with posting this, but scientists have confirmed they have found the 'God' Particle, also known as the Higgs-Boson. This is more of a triumph then putting a man on the Moon!

For the people who are interested in Particle Physics but don't fully understand what this discovery means I will post a link for you to look at.

Didn't read through the entire article, but it seems to have a lot of information.

this is pretty awesome. if i understood it right, this brings us one step closer to understanding the birth of the universe.
but damn, do particle physics make my brain hurt.

It's not necessarily understanding the birth of the Universe, but what happened after the Big Bang once the Universe cooled. That is when particles began to slow down because of their mass (From the Higgs Field) and began to bunch up to form composite particles then atoms.

We already have an understanding of how our Universe was "born".

M-Theory certainly explains how our Universe could have been brought into existence from Membranes (Branes) colliding in the 11th dimension. Not only does it explain that it also tells us that our Universe is just one in an infinite amount of Universes. Each with its own set of Laws. Different amounts of Dark Matter. etc. Too much Dark Matter and a Universe will not form because Atoms will be ripped apart. Too little Dark Matter and Gravity would collapse in on itself.

3rd paragraph down says its possibile but not 100%.

it could be the higgs particle or it could be something else we dont know yet so how do you know?

I look at it this way. If it wasn't the Higgs-Boson then I am sure they would have remained silent about it until they knew. Everything fits, all the tops scientists are 99.999% sure it is the Higgs since it has ALL of the characteristics.

This stuff blows my mind. I can't even comprehend how the LHC operates and how one tracks things so tiny. It's crazy how far things have come in 50 years though. Hell, 20 years!

They send Protons in opposite directions and they smack into each other at near the speed-of-light. There are magnets along the way to speed up, and also magnets that squeeze the particles together before they collide. They say that it's like shooting two nails at each other from 10 km away, hitting both on the tips, and getting them to meet directly in the middle. Takes some serious Mathematics, I think. haha

so what is the dia. of the tunnels? How do you track something as tiny as a particle going at speeds of xxx mph? maybe I should wikipedia :thumb:
