#46839 Something I'm noticing as I get older and as more of my friends get married...
It seems like when guys get married, they have a space or a room in the house that is "their territory". A place where they get to furnish it to their liking without their significant other's opinion. A place where they can chill with their buddies, bs, and have a cold one. Perhaps a place to get some space from the old lady?

Some things I see in rooms like these: A computer, mini fridge, old couch or chairs, posters, dart board, beer sign, old tv. Basically a "man room"

My dad used the garage as the man room. He equipped it with cable, it had an old tv & radio, mini-fridge, heat, posters and a couple stools at a work bench. He would bring his laptop out there to work & did his TV watching out there, and could take a break any time and jump onto his chevelle he was restoring.

My married friends (all 2 of them) have a similar place. One has his computer in a spare room with his models, signs, stereo...
another one uses their partially finished basement. His reminds me of a big dorm room with a futon, computer, stereo, posters everywhere...

Even my fiance's dad has a workshop in the grungy basement of their old home, and that's his space with all his tools, beer fridge, girl calendar, etc.

Is this the norm for guys once we get married? To have a space of our own to hide from the wife & hang out with our friends?

But it seems like women don't have interest in such a place :?
They prefer to use the nice dining room or living room to visit with their friends.

#46847 sad but true....my dad has his gun room. Archery trophies of his and us kids and just like hunting stuff all around. He didn't add a tv or anything b/c he just wants a place that is quiet. I'll probably have a hang out in the garage, but I dont look at getting married for a long time.

#46853 As Dirk has seen, right now my whole condo is pretty much a batchelor pad / man room. But everything is either old, cheap, or ikea for the most part- but still cool. A lot of my stuff would look out of place in a nice house to some people.

What made me think about all this was a house that we are looking at buying. It has a finished room in the basement, but no way is it big enough for all the things I would like to include in my man room (huge ikea entertainment center, tv, old Heathkit stereo with Massive speakers, dart board, pool table, mini fridge, ikea couch + chairs) All things of mine that she does not like because they take up way too much room (pool table, tv, et center, stereo & speakers) or because she does not like the style of the furniture (ikea).
So I told her that in a few years I would like to build an additional garage/storage building toward the back of the property for my cars/tools, since the garage on the house is barely big enough for 2 cars.

She said "Yes, go ahead. As long as it matches the house. And you can put all your stuff like that old stereo and your pool table back there too!"
So I told her that means it needs to be 2 story and a lot bigger than a 2 car garage and she was like "sure, whatever you want- but just don't make it bigger than the house because that would look tacky""
Me = "Sweet!"

I'm not sketching it out on paper until we get the house, but she pretty much gave me the go-ahead to build the garage/shop/man room of my dreams... :hehe:
All because they don't like our stuff in the house where guests will see it, just because it is old or cheap.

#46861 teal, get that in writing! most times after you get married, they forget things that they mentioned before the master ring was placed on their hand. im married, but dont have my room yet that i would like. as soon as the wife gets better, that will be changing. the spare room will be mine

#46904 Not married yet, but it's only a matter of getting some more money saved for the ring. We have a house together, and the garage is mine. My Civic is in there on jackstands, tv/radio, refridgerator, benches, tools, compressor, etc......I will just go do SOMETHING out there for a couple hours if I need to.

She comes in there for overflow bottled water that might be in that fridge. That's it. She parks outside. The rest of the house is hers. The master bathroom has her $hit EVERYWHERE like an obstacle course when I try to take a shower or find my toothbrush, so I don't feel bad about her parking outside.

Just remember, you'll almost always want a bigger garage than you think you need.

#47076 The garage is pretty much my space. The house is only a 2 bedroom ours and my daughters. So the garage is a 2 1/2 car detatched with Heat and an Air Conditioner. I had a refrigerator out there, but it broke so I need to get another. Since I got my Hatch the wifey has to park outside and I park my Jeep outside to now so it's just for the Hatch.
