#47001 man check this bullshit out, so i had this 1990 toyota tercel back in 2003, i just had bought it off a buddy of mines for about 400 bucks, a daily driver for sure, well i just got registration on the car, but only temp pending my smog check, i had done an oil change and all that bs, just random shit, well, i only had the car for 2 days before it was stolen from in front of my house, like broken window, all types of shit, so i reported it to my local authorities which would be the LA county sheriffs, they came out i filed a police report, car wasnt even insured yet. so, they are like yadda yadda we'll look out for it, report it to other countys within california (this was 5 years ago). So i goto check my mail right now, and i get a collections bill for 1,505 and 68 cents. im like wtf, so i call this collector, who put me in touch with a tow yard, and they said weve had your car for about 5 years IN OUR SYSTEM, but it was auctioned off in 2004. meaning the car was not in their possession for 4 whole years, so im like wtf bitch, i got a police report, im calling from california, shes like well, you have to pay us 1500 for storage fees, im like dont you mean just for the time the car is there, or you charge me everyday for paperwork, shes like yea its a stolen recovery cause the car was stripped in a PRIVATE PARKING area, therefor they dont have/cant send me any mail to notify me my car was in there tow yard. this is a whole 5 years later, i called the DMV, all the paperwork i had on the car, was in my car, so when i filled out that report 5 odd years ago, they told me, hey, you paid 400 for the car which isnt even considered "grand theft" so im like uh, sure, just find my car, cause had i known they woulda charged me 1500 bucks 5 years ago, and they had my car, i woulda told em to keep the POS. so i called the DMV, and they're like, well after the car hasnt been registered for 4 years, it drops off your name as far as registration goes, so im pretty much having to get a lawyer now and sue the shit out of the collections place and the tow yard, i recorded all my conversations with the DMV Tow Yard and Police Station via my computer recording set up, and that bitch from the tow yard is like, i dont care, fuck you, and hung up. so yea, i got screwed on a 5 year stolen car.

#47015 oh yea, and since the car wasnt covered full by an insurance company (car was stolen 32 hours after purchase) i am fully liable for the car even though a police report was made. meaning had i had full coverage i wouldnt be paying a dime. i have full coverage on all the cars at my house. i got fuckin jipped, they were like, if you pay in one flat rate of 1100 dollars right now, this can go away. im like yea, like i got 1100 just to pull out my ass.

:x :x :x :x :x :x :x :x :x :x :x

#47024 Very lame. Good luck on getting your Lawyer. I hate it when people get scammed like that. Make them pay

#47025 what if you just ignore them? They screwed you by:
1. not reporting the car found to police.
2. auctioning your car.
3. continuing to charge you for the next 4 years.

They know it's a scam, thats why they offered to make it $1100 if you paid right then & there. Some people would believe this BS and actually do it. The same people who still fall for those Nigerian scams.

can they even prove that they even had your car?
By DannyCraQ
#47026 they dont want to prove it, they didnt want to give me any information, its an actual tow yard, but i was never contacted and let known my car was there, yet all my info was in the car and they had the opportunity to contact me which they never did. im assuming cause it was another state. i wouldnt say its a scam, its a loophole they use to do this.

Therefore it is negligence on their part. You should not have to pay for a company's half assed methods of doing business. They could have done something, but chose not to. You had no knowledge of the situation and could have not done anything, even if you wanted to.
You have done nothing wrong, someone stole your car, towing company found it, sold it, and want you to pay for 5+ years of storage, 4 of which were AFTER they sold your car!
Why would anybody in their right mind even consider paying these scammers :x

#47053 ..... shitty deal for you man, i work for a tow yard and well if they get your car and you dont clame it they have to send out a letter to notify you that they have it then they have to wait 14 days and send another oneafter the 14 days are up after that one the company has the right to sell or crush your car so they get their money out of it, for doing the tow, but after that you dont owe them a pennie at least thats how my bosses tow yard goes,

and another thing if it was stripped in a private parking lot like you said then there wouldnt have been anything to auction off. imo it would be a crush.
By DannyCraQ
#47065 yea thats what i said. i said, you're telling me it was stripped and sold in an auction for 150 bucks?

but she made it seem like not totally stripped, just doors and interrior shit, but still actually drove from what they told me.

and Rob, i told em that, i was like well ya kept the fuckin car anyway and then charged me for 4 years AFTER it was sold at an auction

this is what she told me

your car was sold in 2004 in an auction for 150 to help cover the costs of the impound fees. which at that point was not 1500 bucks, thats for sure.

they said this went to collections in december, so wtf? its march

and also, since they had my car, they had to run the vin number right? all my info was in there, no need to run it, send me a fuckin letter saying you have my car, cause i know you can pay them 250 summin to junk it, which i wouldve gladly paid.

but this is also LAS VEGAS NEVADA

so make sure if you're from cali and your car gets stolen report it in all the surrounding states so you dont end up in a fucked up position im in

when i registered the car, i put the total cost @ 0 so i wouldnt pay taxes, but still claimed i got the car for 400, which aint that big of a deal, fine me, whatever, but make me pay 1500 for a car that was worth about a quarter of that? fuck no.
By DannyCraQ
#47066 they are charging me for the paperwork, i really dont wanna spend it, but what am i to do?

should i goto this tow yard in vegas which is like 4 hours away and cause hell like no other?

cause i mean the shit makes 0 sense

ALSO i reported my car stolen right? so then it should say stolen when the plates are ran

i think the local sherrifs fucked me up by not making it outside the LA county area cause it was a shitty car, but my shitty car noentheless, which means if i dont pay this collection bill, they can come tow my other cars right? its been 4 years and nothing has happened, but still.

#47122 iF a car is reported stolen, the plates and Vin should be tagged as such, and anyone that runs the car will find this out.

#47137 there was a lack of communication between the tow yard and the sherrifs who reported the car stolen. You don't have to pay for either if their mistakes or laziness. You're the victim, you already lost your car and the tow yard already sold your car after it was stolen & recovered without contacting you... Even though your information was in the glovebox.

You are the last person in this mess who is at fault. Don't waste your time going to their shithole in vegas, Don't pay anything to the scammers.

#47159 Paying would be the EASY way out, but if I were you I'd fight until I was dead.

Even maybe try to get some publicity out of it, go to a local paper or something and tell people you know, you can probably win more support and put pressure on the parties involved who were in the wrong.

Good luck to you though bro.
