while driving my speedometer goes to zero and check engine light comes on,later it starts working by it self. any ideas why this may happen?

its probably the VSS

Yeah, your car is OBD I. Check your codes by following this tutorial. VSS is Vehicle Speed Sensor, which would throw a code 17 when it's out which causes your speedometer to just stop working basically.

Definitely sounds like a VSS. Not too expensive and easy to fix
