#144501 ARP headstud install
first, a pic of tap, headstud, and stock headbolt.
Image

i always run a tap to clean out the threads in the block.
this is to 'torque' the studs accurately
btw, note that piston #1 is at tdc. i make sure before i remove the head.
Image
i run the tap all the way down, but only a few turns at a time, backing out and cleaning the gunk off the tap.
i dab a bit of 30w oil onto the tap every time i start it.

Image
Now make sure the deck of the block is PERFECTLY clean.
if you wouldn't eat something off it, clean it until you would.
and stop eying my jdm LSD trans!

now, pick up one of the headstuds. one end has a hex shaped hole for an allen wrench.
this end goes up. take some ARP lube and smear a little bit on the threads(of the end that goes into the block). you only need a little, do not make a mess.
start 'threading' it into the hole. run it all the way down. once it is 'finger tight', i take my allen wrench and give it an eighth of a turn so it is only slightly more than 'finger tight'.
repeat for each one.
notice the one on the left corner, (closest to the vtec solenoid) is a little higher. don't be alarmed, this is correct.

Image
i got a little excited an put some of the lube on the top threads too.
i should of waited till i got the head gasket on.

my fingers had lube on them so i didn't take a pic, but the head gasket goes on next.
make sure its is on the correct direction and all the holes line up.
it take a bit of patience to make it fit over all the studs so work it gently.
(btw,i do not use copper spray)

Image
now make sure the surface of the head is perfectly clean to ensure a good seal.
VERY IMPORTANT, MAKE SURE CAM IS AT TDC (cyl #1) SO YOU DO NOT BEND YOUR VALVES
in the above pic it is not, but i turned it to tdc before i put it on the block.

now gently lower the head over the the studs and gently set it on the block.
do not drop it.
Image
now, i carefully put on the washers (because i don't want to drop them somewhere hard to get) and start the nuts. i run them down with a short extension and a 12 point socket.

Then i get out my torque wrench. i do the old fashioned 3 step way. it has always worked for me. in the correct order, tighten all ten head nuts to 40ftlbs, then again all 10 to 50ftlbs, then all ten to 60ftlbs

This is the proper sequence, if you are facing the front of the car:

08 06 02 04 10

09 03 01 05 07

good job, you're all done!
again, this is how i do it. i have had many successful installs.
questions, comments, criticism are welcomed.

here are the ARP instructions, word for word, re-typed by me (after i cleaned my hands)
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
1) To ensure proper thread engagement and accurate torque readings, clean and re-tap ALL threadS in the block. Re-tap only if necessary.

2) Clean and inspect all hardware prior to installation. Look for obvious defects or shipping damages, plus proper fit, length and dimensions.

3) A. If cylinder head studs protrude into water jacket, lubricate the block threads of the studs with ARP THREAD SEALER.
If cylinder head studs protrude into the blind hole, lubricate the threads, nuts and washers with ARP MOLY ASSEMBLY LUBRICANT or 30 wt motor oil.
Screw studs into block "HAND TIGHT ONLY"
Note: LOCKTITE MAY BE USED IF A PERMANENT MOUNTING OF THE STUD IS PREFERED. THE FASTENERS, HOWEVER, MUST BETORQUED PRIOR TO THE LOCKTITE SETTING UP.
4) Install cylinder heads adn check for binding or misalignment.
5) ARP recommends using the ARP MOYL LUBRICANT or at the very least, a good quality Moly Lubricant as opposed to motor oil. This is due to higher friction on the studs as well as inconsistencies in the clamping force of the fasteners when motor oil (or low quality lubricant) is used.

PRELOAD (TORQUE) RECOMMENDATIONS:
Torque values are based on 75% of the fasteners yeild strength. Use manufacturers torque sequence but do not use the engine manufacturers torque specs. Torque the nuts to 60ft lbs for ARP MOLY LUBRICANT (or the ARP THREAD SEALER)

Note: Do not use any other Moly Lube. Use ARP MOLY LUBE or head gasket failure can result.

#144613 I wasn't eyeing the LSD tranny.. i was EYE FUCKING it...
