General engine questions/issues that aren't specific to the other categories

#70392 Ok first off I have a civic EG 1.3 DX. It's a carbed engine not injection.

When I start my car (cold start) it idles normally at say 2k or whatever it is and then after 30 seconds or so that drops to about 1 and a half. But once my temp gauge reaches half way (normal operating temperature) my revs drop to something silly like 200-300 rpm which is basically stalling and sometimes it does actually stall when u dip the clutch approaching junctions etc...

Well ive tried to help it by tightening the throttle screw which improved my idle but i left my car to completely cool down and when i started it back up it was idling at just over 3k which is stupidly high really and loud (not good for the neighbours)

What I would like to know is...

How do I increase my idle revs without it revving stupidly high when it's cold or flooding my engine while my car is switched off and parked?

I have also reset my ecu to see if that worked but it didnt. maybe it is something to do with the idle control valve? but i think ive located it and I cannot find a screw on it (or maybe im looking at the wrong thing).

Thanks in Advance for any help anyway because its starting to bug me now and is also dangerous if my car stalls just before a roundabout and my steering goes really stiff lol.

#70396 Hey dude, well basically, check your carb, it may be clogged with dirt etc and that can cause the engine to stall sometimes.

Idle control valve, look up a cleaning DIY and clean it out.

Check your throttle position sensor is not faulty (Can't remember if the carbs have one)

Check Vacuum hoses to make sure there are no leaks they can deteriorate after some time (My friend had this issue) Make sure there aren't any cracks/holes etc.

Check everything that may concern the air into the engine i.e. sensors, vacuum etc. I'm guessing it's either vacuum or sensor related either your TPS or MAP.

#70399 My vacuum hoses are fine. How do i check my carb? and is the idle control valve located on the right side of the carb? thanks.

#70476 You tightened your throttle screw? Do you mean the idle adjustment screw that's on the throttle body? Tightening that will decrease your idle speed. If you're talking about the throttle cable, do not use that to affect your idle like you do on old cars. If you do, you screw up your ECU because you've now made it so you never reach 0 throttle.

Check your ignition timing. If it's too retarded, your idle speed will be low. Idle speed adjustment is in the repair manual.

#70510 how do you check ignition timing?

1992-95 MODELS

See Figures 10 and 11

1.

Start the engine and warm it up to normal operating temperature. Allow the cooling fan to come on at least once.
2.

Connect a tachometer.
3.

Disconnect the 2P connector from the Idle Air Control Valve (IAC)

In 1993 Honda re-named the Electronic Air Control Valve (EACV) the Idle Air Control Valve (IAC). They are the same part.

4.

Start the engine with the accelerator pedal slightly depressed. Stabilize the rpm at 1000, then slowly release the pedal until the engine settles into its idle. Vehicles with automatic transaxle should be checked with the transaxle in N or P. The idle speed should be:

*

370-470 rpm

5.

Adjust the idle speed, if necessary, by turning the idle adjusting screw.
6.

Turn the ignition switch OFF.
7.

Reconnect the 2P connector on the IAC, then remove the BACK UP (7.5A) fuse in the under hood fuse/relay box for 10 seconds to reset the ECM.

In 1993 Honda re-named the Electronic Control Unit (ECU) the Engine Control Module (ECM). They are the same part.

I've also followed that and it raises my idle speed (while its normal operating temp) but as soon as my car is completely cold again when i start it up it revs at like 3250k ish until it has warmed up
