Help with setting head timing.

Ok, so I have a turbo single cam coupe (ej1) and I blew my head gasket the other day, so i tear the head off and everything, and have it machined flat. Well, the machinist had to turn the camgear so the valves cleared the bottom of the head to be able to mill it.

So my question is, how do I tell exactly if my head is set to tdc in cylinder 1 so it will match with the timing on the block that is set at tdc in cyl 1.

Also, whats the best way to adjust this and all that good stuff.

Thanks for the help :thumb:

Cam gear will have the "UP" mark pointed straight up and the two side "--" Marks lined up with the top of the head.

Make sure the block has Pistons #1 and #4 at TDC(all the way up and any more movement will pull down)

Bolt up your head and then you get the great fun of timing.

I would recommend picking up a repair manual, such as a helms. It will give you all the torque specs you need as well as a Walk through on setting your timing and tightening the belt correctly.

Its a pain with the book, I am sure its even worse with out it.

Good Luck.

I actually do have a repair manual, and I did mark them, but when they cleaned off the head, the mark got rubbed off. :(
