#92380 hey guys,
i say "noise" because i have not really a clue as to what it is so far... so here goes,

so i start my car up in the morning and there is a real bad kind of scraping/ticking noise coming from what i think is the water pump or alternator "area"

i replaced my timing belt and front crank seal about 3 months ago, bought a water pump but the idiot at the auto parts store (Knects) gave me one for a d15 so it didnt fit and i was on a tight time constraint and said screw it.

the weird thing is that it gets better as the engine warms up, and i posted and cleared up my exhaust leak which is what this sounds like. First thing that comes to mind is a spun bearing in the water pump? like a scraping sound that comes with revolutions...

i'm just baffled by this one and it's so damn annoying...along with the fact i don't want my engine to grenade on me on the freeway sometime, if anyone can help or lend SOMETHING/Anything, that would be great

Thanks,
James

#92396 my first thought is that the water pumps are nearly, if not exactly, the same... i could be wrong, but like most anything D series i would expect these to be identical. If that is so, and you just threw it in any old way not caring and not checking tolerances, you could have it out of line a bit, but i doubt it.. did u replace it with a new or used/refurb pump? is there anything leaking from around the pump where it meets the block?

#92416 as regards to the water pump, it was like 2am and i was using my buddies garage and i don't know exactly what model the guy gave me but the one i have has 4 bolt holes and the one he gave me had 5 holes along with a completely different pattern and casting. i would hate to tear it back down but my main goal at the time was fixing the front crank seal because i could lose a quart of oil in about 5 minutes.....

the water pump seems to be sealed up alright, i took the upper timing belt cover off to hope to see anything that might be rubbing but that's not the case either. i have also replaced all my drivebelts recently as in the last couple of months.

my thoughts are timing belt tensioner, water pump bearing, A/C idler (no difference when i turn on or not) or alternator brushes... i took a piece of wood to the a/c, alternator and p/s pump but all seem like there just turning normally. :x

anyway, thanks for the help, and for what it's worth, it happens way bad in the morning (cold) and i put some water pump lube in the radiator a few days ago but to no avail.

#92487 did the impeller blades on the two pumps look even remotely alike or did you even take notice?

#93968 no the shaft runs in a sealed ball bearing type. makin the hole spinning thing impossible. they do seize up tho

#94043 The d16 and d15 pumps are NOT the same. the "ticking" could also be a loose valve adjustment. Sometimes they can "loosin" up a bit after normal wear and tear. after the engine warms up the metal expands and closes that gap making the noise goes away.
Follow this linkhttp://civic-eg.com/viewtopic.php?t=6340&start=0and try doing a lash adjustment.

#96855 Even all d15 pumps are not the same. the z1 and b7 pumps not interchangeable for they are in slightly different locations.

B7 head on z1 bottom = good luck finding a timing belt.(ps d17)
