yes the little pieces "key coding" and little springs in there so they work properly
googled for some pictures for you this is a ignition cylinder but the general idea is the same
the little gold things are for the key code. when you insert the key in to the cylinder. the code has to all align up flat on the top and bottom in order to be able to spin the cylinder.
if one is not code to the key so that the key makes them not flat or irregular it won't be able to turn "start car or unlock doors"
this second picture shows that the last one is not coded properly and the spring keeps it up and you would not be able to turn this lock because it is coded wrong
this would prob be the style of key codes you need there marked with the a number and you have to have your key code or the tool to measure the key codes on the key. Or guess until you get it all right
I know how to re-code locks for cars and most time I still send it out because they have all the tools to cut there time in half vs me spend all day on each lock I end up doing not to mention I have to buy all the numbered key codes pieces "wafers" from them. by the end for the 10-15$ They charge to do it you may as well let them do it for you.
