If you are balling on a budget, Source parts from Junkyard cars. There are qute a few turbo cars in junkyards you can source parts from. Turbod16.com and homemadeturbo.com has good advice on going this route.
If you have the money getting a quality turbo kit is the better route to go. As stated above the 600-700 Turbo kits off ebay are not good quality and will cause many headaches.
You can boost an automatic. I have seen a few turbo Integra LS Automatics and they are pretty peppy. One benefit of being an automatic is you dont have to dump your boost when you shift gears.
Given that D Series automatics are slugs, Turboing one wouldn't be a bad idea IMO. However to do so correctly wont be cheap. You also want to get a FULL TUNE done on your ecu when done. Go to a reputable shop locally and have them dyno tune your car. Dont just get a 'Basemap" Installed. The Base maps are just the start of where to tune from. Running on a base map on a turbo car is only asking for trouble.
d15 bottom ends are good until you pass the 200hp(crank, not wheel) limit, after a stock bottom end wont be reliable. It dones't matter how much psi you have. If you get a huge turbo at 7psi, vs a small turbo at 10psi. The huge turbo will push more air.
Last but not least, Do lots of research before deciding to go this route. although its not a bad route to go. If i had a D Series auto, it would be boosted.
