#222894 So i had a thread http://civic-eg.com/viewtopic.php?t=17581&start=0 which told a story of Granger and fun i ended up tradeing my 4dr for a civic vx that needed help in more ways then one electrical issues galore and body work but hey i wasnt planning on keeping it because at the same time my buddy who had a chevy s10 i think 92 which had a throwout bearing issue decided to trade for a volvo 740gle which was 3 houses down because i said i wanted it and he wanted my vx lol.....so after 3 trades he got the vx and i got my volvo and it is like nostalgia i even went to a gas station to fill up the tires with air and low n behold there was a dirt patch so i hopped in and had some fun slideways in it already but it is not without its problems it has a decent oil leak comming from the rear main seal not a problem for me and it just involves dropping the trans which in a volvo is rather easy since all the bolts are right there.....and replaceing it i also plan on replaceing the clutch and clutch cable just because this thing has about 200k on it i also plan on fixing the electrical bugs it has apparently reverse lights dont work and the headlights dont turn on i think its probaly the reverse switch and a fuse but thatll be check out later.....

it has the normal problems ive run into before with a 700series volvo the trunk shocks are garbage easy fix and the arm rest clip is busted as well but what do you expect from a rather old car im ecstatic however due to one of the features on this thing yep its not an auto its a manual which is rather rare for a 700 series volvo....ive only seen 3 one ive owned one that was in the junkyard a year ago and now this one.....I have a soft spot for the swedish bricks mainly because my dad owned them and really we never had any problems with them until they hit 300 k lol and even then once you figured out the problem it was easy to fix because everythings so darn open.....

so here are the pics of when i got it and how it sits as of 11/14/10

Image

the only 700 series ive seen that i ended up buying without headliner issues
Image

probaly going to get rid of this deck in favor of my pioneer lol
Image

the beast
b230f (maybe it will find its t somewhere along the way lol)
Image

and my favorite feature of the 740 and why i choose it over the 245 (still wish i had a 242 but yea watch the magic)

basic 45' angle
Image

pretty much 90-96' angle with the flip of two little tabs on the hood hinge

the only main rust issue
Image

and the underneath looks clean for haveing sat for awhile

so i do have a plan list coming together but first i want to get this thing up and going to stage 0 or stock minus the radio lol and fix what needs to be fixed so i can drive it..... let me know what you think of my swedish brick

#224159 so quick update just spent 49$'s on needed parts to fix the previous owners shitty wiring and broken parts and may be spending 400$ or so on a parts 740gl 1990 or may end up fixing the 1990 volvo who knows lol this is interestingly becoming another one of my project so very fast lol but yea depending on what happens ill post within the week but yea if i did keep the 1990 id swap mainly what it needs from teh 740 as well as do a 5spd swap however if i kept the 87 id probaly get it so it will pass inspection and last all winter and then swap alot harnesses everything from the 1990 volvo. but yea we will see funds are nada right now slim pickings so yea like i said we will see

#226421 thought id do a quick update as right now its snowing so no pics but in 20'f weather with lake effect snow and wind blowing wildly i decided i was bored enough to venture out and work on a volvo not the 87 i shall be changeing this thread to my newer 1990 volvo 740gl which needs less work already has a black leather interior and yea bought it for 400$ couldnt say no to that one for a car that drove to my house under its own power....

so anywho i tore apart the front end today as the d.side headlight needed to be replaced and the corners as well....

so right now on my new bench i have a bunch of parts sitting their waiting for my evil hands to touch them and make them new again.....

also on a side note the guy that had the 1990 also has a 1992 volvo 740 or 745 (thats right wagon) and its turbo'd just needs a few parts and hes only asking 500 for it ohhh i cannot wait till tax returns volvo wagons are sweet lol never owned a 745 but my dad always had 240 wagons first car i ever drove was a 245 wagon and it was manual and that was fun at i think i was 13 lol.....

anyhow plans with the 1990 as of right now
swap over the suspension from the 87, wires from the speed sensor to the cluster fix the headlights and thats pretty much it.... less work for me as the 87 had a ton of wiring gremlins and such it was ridiculous for me to do all that work plus the body on the 1990 is alot cleaner...and its white wtf how come im in a white mode every car since my hatch except for the 87 is white even the wagon im thinking of nabbing is white....

and a plan for that would be to make it into a truck.....

future plans for the 1990 740
use the 87 parts to make it 5spd and really go from there lol winters here i cant think ahead anymore gotta get this volvo project going....

#230407 So introducing my new project with a brief run thru of my old stuff.....

So quick history of my past volvos....
I bought my first volvo from one of my history teachers back when i was in high school. For 50$ It was great until the wire harness ended up going. I still regret rid of it to this day because i might of saved it, with the knowledge i have now....
Image

Later down the road my father surprised me with this 1991 volvo 940se. I wanted no part in it at first but once i got in turned the key, hit boost for the first time and i was happy he got it for me.I ended up selling this as well because at college someone hit me in the front took off(while i was in class) and i couldnt get the hood open again. Plus with the lack of parts at my disposal and a newly aquired manual civic. Yea i know hate on the civic but they are damn reliable just like a volvo and around here alot easier to get parts for. Plus it was manual compared to the 940's auto slushbox..So I sold her ......
Image

Fast forward a few years(4 i think) later Ive had a couple civics. I was planning a turbo swap for the civic hatch that i have. And I had alot of the parts too id say 95% of what i needed for a reliable turbo build. But it just seemed a bit too much for something i think ive been growing tired of/ or just bored....So i started my search I knew what i wanted a Volvo but the 740 wasnt my first choice. if i could have found a 242 that would of been nice (and it probaly would stay stock for the time being because they just look sexy). but around me there are no such things as a 242 for sale for a decent price lol. You guys out west took them all from the east coast im sure. So went with the next best thing something i knew that had awesome features on it and stuff like that. A volvo 740, but i wanted a manual one which would of saved me alot of time in a swap. Low and behold i found one traded a beat up rusty civic for it now it wasnt bad blue out and in. rust here and there but it ran alright got it home and well lets just say its a parts car now.....due to major wiring issues for just about everything.
1987 Volvo 740GLE

So i was once again on the hunt and i ended up coming across a 1991 volvo 740gl which was in really nice shape ran well. headlights and front corner lens well they where gone (pics are after i took off the front assemblies) Anyhow i was at first going to swap everything over to the '87 but the more i got into the '91 the more i felt something special about it. Plus it had the black leather interior uncracked dash and stuff like that. So upon consideration i took it upon myself to fix up this '91 and already ive bought many things for it....

Now the fun stuff or somewhat fun stuff....

Well ive been into volvos alot and well i wanted a b234ft setup however i didnt wish to shovel out alot of mula. and finding one in my junkyard is a never going to happen scenario. So talking with my friend and searching all the projects on here i went with either a nissan engine or ford v8. Ended up as im sure you can guess going with the V8;picked a running 5.0 out of a 1996 f150 with around 150k miles for 225 pulled. which i thought was awesome because it was horribly cold out and has been since the beginning of december. in my area it hasnt gotten over the freezing mark for almost 15 days now. Anyhow after getting the engine with all the harnesses, and peices except for the a/c was never going that route anyways. I started makeing my list of parts that where priorities and stuff i will be needing down the road. and today for 40$ from the same f150 i got a ford 8.8 rear with the 2nd half of the driveshaft. Well enough talk here are the pics

Now im still on the hunt for a T5 trans going to the junkyard hopefully when i get some money. but for right now i think i have the start of a nice project.

Plans as of right now
-get GT40P heads intake and exhaust manifolds off a ford explorer as well as a rear disc setup
-havent decided if im staying efi or going carburated
-going to start getting things planned out further after more research....

Anyhow hopefully between the two 744's i have i can make a awesome one. and i should be picking up a 1993 745 turbo for cheap shortly as well so i can drive and use that as my parts hauler.....Anyways just thought id post this because it has been awhile since ive been back on this board. And yea its going to be a slow project as i have a concrete slab out back that i work on and im not a good cold weather person makes me grumpy so for the time being im just researching collecting and buying...

#231256 Just checking up on your projects, CCR - and ---- Holy smokes - is that Ford engine going to drop right in or do you have a lot of work cut out for you??!!
User avatar
By Classiccarsrule85
#231405 all i have to do is fabricate mounts and then drop it in and wire it up engine bay is large enough to accommodate many engine swaps lol i just choose the v8 as its relatively cheap and has been done numerous times in volvos and is a torque monster as this will indeed help when i go out and throw her sideways lol

#234663 well thought id throw up an update as it seems like i have reached a point where im starting to get a good idea of what other parts i am in need of for this project and what parts i have thusfar.....

-Parts i have
-ford v8-5.0 302 from a 96 f150
-rear end from the same veihicle 8.8

Newly aquired parts
-drove all the way to NJ for this trans a t5 trans from a thunderbird with a v6 bellhousing ill just have to find a 5.0 t5 bell housing now....
ohhh n let the fun begin as my buddy offered me a deal as he was going thru rough times on a bunch of parts for my project he being a ford guy
-edlebrock intake, carb, cam and lifters
-and 351Windsor heads (he put it as these heads are like the b16 of the honda world....

And parts i need before mockup
-the 5.0 t-5 bellhousing

parts im looking into getting for betterness
-96+ ford explorer rear end 8.8 with rear disc (the one i have is drum

-a rebuild kit for the 5.0 as i want a fresh start when i drop it in and have fun :hehe:

after that there really isnt much else thats needed as carburation is a hell of alot simpler then efi....

here are some quick pics i took of the new stuff dont have everything but im stull in the process of figuring out how when where this is going to happen more then likely im trading my eg fro a crx si to a good home as well.....anyhow thats a different car here are the pics of teh edlebrock stuff
