shift lower, get up to speed slower, clean/rebuild the carb, and everything else stated above

#211148 Don't listen to this trailer trash cat. Do all the stuff I've done so far. tune up , valve adjustment, check tire pressure, install a cold air intake. (i know someone is gonna get on here and say it will consume more fuel, but actually it won't. It will burn the fuel more efficiently, therefore allowing you to use less resulting in improved gas LP
mileage.) The only two people I would listen to are teal_dx and blk92hb

#211218 shifting at or before 2000 hardly makes a differences, gains about 0.5mpg and bugs me with the slow speed, but ill go clean my carb and check timing, and richness if thats the right word? but i think for us carb guys the cleaning of the carb is most important

#211315 I would do a rebuild it dont cost that much and at the same time you will be able to clean it. The reason i say rebuild it is, if the float in the carb is bad it will put more fuel into the combustion chamber. Once you put it back on the car you will have to retune the carb for proper air/fuel mixture then recheck the ignition timing. But before you do all of that do a full tune up, spark plugs, spark plug wires, dizzy cap, dizzy cap rotor, o2 senser, idk if it will have a fuel filter but if it does change that, air filter (stock or after market, ie k&n, aem), change out the stock muffler(going to an aftermarket muffler will let the motor breath better there for better mpg and hp) check the tires, check the cat (it could be plugged), oil change, (using synthetic helps due to less friction even in the transmission) and last dont put your foot to the floor when you shift if its a manual trans. Good luck i hope this helps
