D15, D16, D17 and Mini-Me swaps

#222246 i have a pretty much stock 95 cx hb so its got the slow AF 70 hp d15b8.

im trading a friend some r1 headers for a good condition y8 head.

iv been researching this swap for a while and found a lot of information but i have a few more questions.

1: i understand the b8 only has 8 valves, i read that i need to use different pistons. will any pistons from a 16 valve d series work? i can get used pistons from a d15b7 for pretty cheap and im trying to do this as cheap as possible because it is just temporary till i can do a full b or h swap.

2: he doesnt have the ecu to go with the head and mani. i know most people use a p28. but again i dont want to spend too much money. i know i can get a p06 converted and chipped all ready for vtec but will my stock p05 work if converted? and also how much will a place charge me to convert it?

3: but most importantly, how affective is this swap? anybody here done it?
ive read that doing mini-me swap pretty much gives you the hp of whatever head you are using.

that would mean i will be bolting on about 60 hp...for about $350

4: will i be better of just trading it for a z6 head? iv heard the swap is a lot easier.

..and i do plan on throwing an ebay turbo kit on it soon after the swap if that makes any differences in what i should be buying for it

any help is appreciated

#222248 one more questions:

after getting everything i need for the swap, if i took it into a honda shop and had them do the work on it about how much could i expect to be charged?

#222284 yes b7pistons wil work
any d series 16v pistons will work you will just have diffrent compression depending on the piston

check out this website for playing with compression
http://www.zealautowerks.com/dseries.html

any obd1 ecu can be chipped to be a p28 or whatever you would like
as for cost not too sure there
id guess like around a hundred or so

i personally have never done a y8 on a b7/b8 block but in theroy its the same as a z6 head on a b7 block wich i have done and it ran great
i know it will work if thats what your asking

z6 heads are alot more friendly if you will lol
and pretty comon
butttttt
the y8 head will yeild you a higher compression so i say stick with the y8 head
but since your going turbo
you want low compression so id say
trade the head for a z6
i got one if you wanna trade
hit me up

as for the dealer doing the work they wont
well depends on your state
some states its illeagle to swap motors that are not the same even heads

1. I've taken apart a D15b8 motor before and the pistons had reliefs for 16 valves, even thought the head was only 8 valve.

2. I had a P05 ecu that was chipped for Crome so it's possible. Not sure what it would cost... I'd just buy a virgin P28 for $100, you'll always get your money back when you go to sell it.

3. Th3 y8 swap will give a little more HP than the z6 mini-me due to higher compression. Depending on the head gasket, you'll be looking at around 10.5:1 CR. The z6 mini me will pretty much be the same power as a D16z6, the y8 mini-me a little more due to the compression.

4. The z6 mini-me swap isn't really any easier, just a couple less steps (IAT sensor and cold start assist- only on 98-00 y8 intake manifolds)

#222388 thanks everybody for the info. got all my questions answered that i had about the swap.

might be a couple months before i swap it just so i can learn everything i possibly can to make sure i dont screw anything up in the process.
but when it happens ill definitely take pictures all the way through and post it up on here since i havent seen many posts on the b8/y8 mini
