#224147 A properly built engine will break it-self in, within the first 1/2 second it is started. Put an SAE NON-detergent oil in at first. This will help the rings seat. Run it for a good 20 minutes, then change the oil.

#224151 Oh yeah and the only other thing is whatever you do you do not run synthetic oil in any rebuild. not until at least five thousand miles.

#224212 Yea I was just gonna ask about spark plugs and when I can run synthetic or synthetic blend in it, but 92 lhdsiconvo already answered my question about the oil. What oil should I use then?

#226677 Ok its been a little while since i was in here and the motor is almost done being dropped. I say almost because i had to get some last min items. My queation though is what oil should I use for the first hundred to thousand miles? Weight? What's a good brand? And a non detergent oil ?

#226692 really crappy generaic oil
like supertech for the first 50 miles
or some people use rotella iv heard that works well for break in
but remember break in is the first 20 to 50 miles is very very iimportant if you dont seat those rings in that time your motor will not have good compression
i used the oil i was goin to be running in the car wich was penzoil 10w 30
DO NOT RUN SYNTHETIC for break in or at all for that fact stick to 5w 30 or 10w 30
after 50 miles change the oil and filter and check your compression
dont be scared of smoke in the first 20 miles thats normal and is a good sign and it should stop smomikng once the rings are seated properly
mine stopped smoking 2 miles down the road cause my rings seated very fast
your may be diffrent
have fun and give that motor hell :thumb:
