D15, D16, D17 and Mini-Me swaps
By civickid18
#226969 i need help, i am doing an all motor buil with a d15b7 block and head and want to run vx rods and p29 pistons, i know they work in a z1 block with a b7 head but i can't find a straight answer anywhere if they will work in a b7 block with a b7 head.

#226975 a d15 block is a d15 block .
cranks, rods and pistons are different.
b7 head has larger CC (lower compression) than z1 head.

#227007 D15b7 and D15z1 use different water pumps, so the blocks aren't the same.

The internals for the d15b7 and d15z1 should swap because they use the same size bearings. The D16z6 and D16a6 use slightly larger bearings.

x2

I'm pretty sure the D15z1 has the same block as the d16z6 just uses a shorter stroke to get the 1.5liters. Its deck height might be a few mm's shorter.

I know that the D15z1 has 137mm Long rods which are longer then the other d15's which have a 134mm Long Rod. Its rods have the same crank shaft connection size as the other d15's. The JDM d15b has the larger d16 crank size.

Its possible to the pistons and rods into a d15b7 block. I checked on the Honda D series compression calc and the pistons wont come out of the block which is good. However with a d15b7 head your compression will be low. Real Low. 7.28:1

I was thinking about building up a d15z1 block with LS Rods(and custom bushing) and a z6 head then give it a little boost. I had a d15z1 block however a friend needed a D Series block before I ever built it so I sold to him. Unlike most D15's they have a longer Rod/Stroke Ratio for better low end torque.

Totally missed the p29 pistons. I calculated z1 pistons.

Using p29 Pisons on VX Rods will make your pistons go 0.049 inches above the deck. meaning the pistons will come out of your block, possibly having your rings go above the deck and unspring.

Also Tuning 13.17:1 compression on Pump gas will be quite hard. I know 12:1 is possible. 13.17:1? thats going to be quite a feet. You would most likely need to Run e85 or Race Gas. And still have a hell of a Tune.

When reconfiguring a setup make sure the section that says "Piston-to-Deck Height" isn't a Negative(-) If so the pistons above the block. and you dont want that.

#227119 again you must have clicked something wrong because with the setup i'm punching in the piston to deck height is -0.049 inches. but thanks for that calculator link it really cleared this build up for me so know i can go ahead with the build

#227162 NO!!!

Chrono is absolutely right the piston will be 0.049 above the deck! The minus in the claculator means that its above and plus its under!

do the math
137 + 42,25 + 29 = 208,25mm and your deck heigh is 207mm so..... 1,25mm (0.049) above the deck!

The D15z1 block is the JDM D15b vtec block with other pistons, crank, rods (137mm) and head.

What kind of P29 Pistons will you use? Because there are aftermarket P29s that have a comp height of 30mm istead the OEM 29mm. So be careful what kind of piston you get.

And watch out for your spark plugs they might hit the roof of the piston so you have to index them.

the difference of water pumps is the size of gear/# of teeth. (22/19)
you can interchange b7 and z1 water pumps.
to answer the OP's question, the blocks are the same.

On the d15z1 I put a d16z6 water pump and it lined right up.

on a d15b7 block I got to do a Mini-me my d16z6 water pump wouldn't line up, it had a different sahpe.

Really?
Because some manufacturers have the same part for all obd0/1 d-series engines:

I don't think that info is correct...
I tried an OEM water pump from a D16z6 on a D15b7 block and it did not fit - holes didn't line up.

it may not be correct, i was just pointing out the some manufacturers have the same part for all applications.
