******Question about head removal******

- Thu May 05, 2011 9:43 pm #253849 hi everyone, i am at the stage of removing the head of my D15B and wanting to put it onto my D15B2 block. since this is my first attempt, there is a few questions i wanna ask.

1. do i really need to remove the intake manifold?! the bottom nuts seem to be a bitch to reach.

2. what do i use to clean the grease on the block and the head with?!

3. i was told to put black silicon on both side of the new gasket(not head gasket) and this would help creating better seal, is it true?!

4. i read about the removal of oil control jet on the block, do i need to remove that for the swap?!

5. is there anything particular i should be aware of?!

i have read quite a few different write and got them printed off, so hopes everything ok.
but these are questions i could think of now. more should be coming when i am actually removing it later on........

You don't have to, you can take it off with the head as one piece. It will be easier to put the head on by itself though

Pick up some engine degreaser from the parts store and an old brush.

3. i was told to put black silicon on both side of the new gasket(not head gasket) and this would help creating better seal, is it true?!
No way, This would leak for sure. If you use anything, use copper spray.

4. i read about the removal of oil control jet on the block, do i need to remove that for the swap?!
If you're putting a vtec head on a non-vtec block, remove the jet.

5. is there anything particular i should be aware of?!

i have read quite a few different write and got them printed off, so hopes everything ok.
but these are questions i could think of now. more should be coming when i am actually removing it later on........

after i have remove everything(all the pumps, belt), am i right about the steps of removing/installing timing belts

Removing
1. Remove top half cover

2. Check the cam gear are at TDC

2. Loosen the adjust bolts

3. Push the tensioner to release tension

4. Retighten the adjusting bolts

5. Remove lower cover & crank pulley

5. Take the belt off


Installing
1. Put the belt back on follow the sequence of crank shaft, tensioner, water pump, cam shaft

2. loosen adjusting bolt

3. Rotata the crank shaft ANTICLOCKWISE 3 teeth on cam gear

4. Tighten the adjust bolt

i get confused when i read about adjusting timing belt. it says always turn crank shaft Anticlockwise. but then it says turn the crank shaft clockwise to check the belt is sitting correctly?![/b]

it gives you something to help hold on to while lifting the head :thumb:

- Sat May 07, 2011 10:59 pm #254189 been talking to a motorshop owner today, he told me if i am taking the head off, i better to get the head skimmed. i know skimming the head would raise the compression ratio slightly and might see some gain in performance, and i also know if i take it too far, i might have clearance problem. but is it worth to do it while i have the head off now?! whats the max. i could take off, consider it will still be reliable to run.
