D15, D16, D17 and Mini-Me swaps
By z6civic249
#278802 I bought a 93 civic with what I thought was a full d16z6 engine in it. Got to looking at the head and it says po8-1. The valve cover doesnt say v-tec. Im popping the V-tec solenoid code but when I went to swap in a new z6 solenoid, it isnt the same. Am running a p28 ecu if that matters at all. Just need help finding out what head is on it so I can get this solenoid swapped and the car running better.

#278803 a 92-93 D16z6 looks like this:

94-95 D16z6 looks like this:

All 4 D16z6's I have owned have heads stamped "p08" 3 of them have "p28" Intake Manifolds, one of them(from my delsol) had a p08 stamped intake manifold even though it looked the same as the p28 version.

The p28 ECU is the correct ecu. If swapping out Vtec solenoids doesn't work try cleaning it out with carb cleaner. If it still doesn't work then its wiring in bewteen the vtec solenoid and the ecu. Its possible you have the VTEC wiring on another sensor.

#278804 Went to swap out the vtec solenoid today. Buddy brought over his from his old z6. But they are not the same solenoids. Will the solenoids bolt right up the same? And i guess the valve cover not saying vtec isnt a big deal? freaked me out when i seen mine

edit: just noticed the 92-93 with the valve cover. that answers that ?

#278805 As long as its a normal D Series VTEC Solenoid it will work. The VTEC-E is the same solenoid, the differences are in the head for VTEC-E as oppossed to VTEC.

I Belieave B or H VTEC Solenoids will NOT work, As well as the D Series 2 stage VTEC Solenoid(VTEC-E, normal cam, then VTEC) will also not work.

as long as whats on the head is the same you should be okay, if the solenoid itself looks a little different it should be okay.

However to run on a USDM p28, your VTEC Solenoid needs to be USDM, the JDM one will not work with the USDM p28 ecu.

#278806 Ok. well im unsure if it is a jdm d15b head 100%. but the different looking vtec solenoid makes me think it is. so ill swap that out in the next few days and see if that helps the prolem at all. ill update then. please dont delete thread.

#278886 some head codes:

D16Z6
92 Si D16Z6 5sp------- P08-2 (9/2) stamped on RS of code.
93 Si D16Z6 5sp-------P08-4 (9/3) stamped on rs of head
93 EX D16Z6 5spd----- P08-4
93 EX D16Z6 5sp-------P08-3
94 EX D16z6 5 spd---- PO8-2
94 Si D16z6 5sp-------- P08-3
94 EX D16Z6 5sp--------P08-4
94 SI D16z6 5sp -------P08-5
95 EX D16Z6 Auto------P08-2
D15B (JDM)
92 VTi D15B Auto--- -- P08-1 (9/1)<-- RS of Code

SOME d15b vtec solenoids don't have oil pressure switch connectors.
(the green one)
obd2 vtec solenoids are shaped differently and will NOT work with p08 heads.
you should post pics of what you have.
