D15, D16, D17 and Mini-Me swaps

#69518 Wsup guys! I got a d16z6 and somethin gave a day or so ago. My boy is saying its a cracked piston. :? I was lookin into droppin the motor and tearin it apart to see what gave out followed with a rebuild when I stumbled onto this one mini me build post. They mentioned somethin about after taking the head off, you can drop the oil pan and unbolt the rods from the bottom and pop the pistons out through top? If you wanted to replace the internals. While the block is in the bay. Wondern if anybody has some insights about goin forth with that?

#69522 easier to just take the whole motor out just drop it out of the bay and set it somewheres to really take a look at it since it gets hard in the engine bay some bolts are hard to get to and easily stripped...

, in half a day u will have the motor out and on a stand , very easy to take out, there's a DIY on here, on how to take it out through the bottom.

Very easy, then u can look it over, do the mini-me a lot easier etc

Cool, Thanks for the tips and confirming my thoughts. I just hoped I could save some time and work by not dropping the motor, but would just be harder.

Yeah I read that over a few times just to be sure I understood each step. As this is my 1st time. I"ll have to look into gettin a stand or make due with what I have.

As for the mini-me, I already have a z6, what would be the mini-me of it? Just tryin to get some ideas for the rebuild. Thanks again guys!! :thumb:

u dont need a stand if u dont want to spend te extra money, just get big table and it will do, so what block u have ??


u need a D16Z6 , p28ecu, also i would go with a D16Y8 metal head gasket, and the REST depends on the budget.

#69535 I have a complete d16z6 block and head, stock with a p28 in a 92 4dr ex.
So Im not sure what the mini-me would be from that other than maybe a y8 IM which is the way I'll go later down the road after this rebuild for turbo. I was lookin at mini-me posts just to get some ideas about some of the interchangeable parts (i.e. pistons, rods, etc). But it seems like I have a good place to start from with the stock d16z6.

And an engine stand is only bout 50-60 bucks at the local autozone, which I dont mind spending as long as it makes it that much easier to work with :) I could prolly sell it on CL to make some chump change back after :woot:

#69559 True, ok yeah if u have full D16Z6 then ur set to go just re-build, I/H/E , and the rest depends on budget, mabey a small cam ?
