#188332 Alright well its finally time to start my motor build since my buddy is buying my 4dr sedan so i have to start my build sooner than expected.....And well im going ot be spending money to get this thing going my hope is to hit 170-200+hp without the use of Vtec since my car rejected it lol.....but yea so heres the basis for my build....

It will be SOHC going into my 95 cx hatch and more than likely its going to be used as all 3 (strip autox and d.d.) but mainly its gonna be auto cross and a daily driver....as i dont find it a 100% fun at all to go and drive a straight line as fast as possible lol.....

So alrighty now for the info woot

Bottom End
D16z6 block and crank-due to the fact that it was built to handle vtec as well as oiling issues
** Still deciding on rods and pistons **

Hardware
I plan on using all ARP hardware so as to make things safer and have better peace of mind....

Top end
D16Y7 yes Y7 no Vtec
thinking about a Delta 272 cam which was quite interesting to research cams for this motor.....
port and polishing etc

Intake and exhaust.....
Intake manifold i have either a Y8 or Z6 intake more than likley using a Z6 intake since the Y8 dosent look all that interesting but who knows may go ahead and get a aftermarket intake manifold....

exhaust im planning on cutting apart my oem z6 421 for the flange and downpipe flange....mainly since i would like to build something that well allows me to get to all the exhaust to head bolts so its easier i hate when bolts are hard to get too especially when repairs are needed and needed to be quick.....

So now for my "vtec" killer lol a nice Turbo
Still deciding i have a Volvo TD-04 sitting in my junkyard but it had a bit of shaft play back and forth. so im hesitant at buying that im gonna talk to a buddy of mine since he can get turbos here and there for decent prices that are good to go....

Tuning
My friend uses a Mega Squirt kit and its on his miata
And yea some are saying to me that mega squirt wont be good for a honda hondata is the better option....

So to be honest im thinking of going Megasquirt since i think hondata really is mainly for the use with Vtec and since im not useing that id rather do megasquirt.....

so yea about 500$ for that system......

but anyhow thats my build thus far still in its beginning stages once i get the money for the 4dr i will have around 1200 to sink into parts and building of this motor and whatever left will go forth into my suspension build at a later date as i figure out what i want in those aspects ........

So let me know what you guys n gals think about this whole setup and what do you think of my expected goals are they too high or about right or am i building more than i really think i may be needing.....

And what struck this project is i had a 940se volvo turbo and it was sweet even tho it was heavy it still kept up with that of a stripped ef hatch with a semi built b16 until i let off because i dont really speed over the limit....lol but yea after that and after seeing countless turbo supercharged and n/a builds on multiple websites i do appreciate everyones hard work and i would like to go my own route and go turbo......on a non vtec z6 motor where the spark plugs are in the position i prefer and everything is built with functionality and a touch of reality and the whole fact of im going to start off with a pretty much brand new motor which will allow me to not have to deal with other people who say the motor is good and come to find out the motors junk and they are gone unable to reach lol...... pics to come shortly of my parts ive gathered thus far lets hope for the best.....

#188357 Non vtec power is totally attainable. The Delta 272 is a very good budget cam, a couple of other companies you can look at are Exospeed, also very good (kinda slow turn around and they do need a core) and Bisimoto (pricey but very good cams).

That volvo turbo will probably make you very happy, you can get a rebuild kit for it for not a lot of money (I think) and you will have a nice small QUICK spooling turbo (I probably have the same one sitting in my garage waiting to go on my car).

As for tuning are you doing it yourself? If not use the software that your tuner likes the best. Hondata is a great system you can get the s100 2/boost option for less than half what you are going to spend on megasquirt ... and it will do everything all of us normal people really need it to do (when you get a dedicated track car then the s300 is a good option but otherwise WAY too pricey for street apps, IMO). You could also look into CHROME, Neptune, and Ectune, all good systems from what I've heard.

Personally I would use the a6/b7 head, I've heard it's the best flowing non-vtec head, but I can't remember anymore. Haven't done much non-vtec research recently (but I will be for my next engine).

For the intake the Edelbrock Performer or Skunk2 are both good choices if you decide to go aftermarket.

For the exhaust just get a cast manifold. Or take a look here go-autoworks.com he does really good quality work. You might want to check them out for a lot of your turbo needs. He's more than willing to answer questions if you ask.

Your power goals are totally attainable on stock internals, should be a fun project.

#188371 I agree, why use the y7 head over the a6 head? The y7 head is going to raise your compression with the smaller square combustion chamber. That will make tuning more critical when you are boosted.

#188386 Thanks for all the comments mainly the whole problem i dislike the b7 and a6 and b2 head is spark plug position yea its practically the same deal but meh and the casting seems a bit cleaner on the y7 head there isnt a cast area for Vtec like you would find on the other heads

but yea i do see where you guys are comming from plus there is also the availability of me finding a good a6 head i could bearly get anything a6 around my parts so i grabbed a Y7 and i think since im going aftermarket pistons and rods as i am going to be building / overbuilding if you will so i know it will handle more if and i know i will want more power.....

but yea i mean i want to tune it to the best of the possibilities and i will be tuning it with the help of my friend since hes worked with mega squirt before.....on his miata turbo build he did and its a beautiful thing....but yea like i said im going to have pictures up tomarrow so we will see...

#188387 It will be cool to see your Boosted Non-vtec D Series.

I like the styling of the D16y7 head over that of the d16a6 or d15b7 heads. Having the spark plugs in the front of the engine just makes since and looks good IMO. However the D16a6 will make better power because of its better flow, Especially with a good cam.

This will be a cool build, I look forward to seeing this progress. :thumb:

nah thanks but no thanks kinda made up my mind on this one i know the a6 head has great flow its just i really dont care lmao im going to be porting and polishing to give the y7 head better flow anyhow so i think that should work itself out in that aspect....but anyhow here are the pics i promised a day late but ohh well lol better late then never............

Image
Y7 head with AEM trutime camgear that i got off of Dippin_EG

And the bottom end which will see a nice rebuild so as to make sure she will handle the powerr!

But yea still decideing on what i am doing had a thought in my head of selling off everything but after working on the 4dr lol and getting the dash out in under 20mins i love me civics lol but that thought always pops into my head always....

Anyhow might be deciding on a different turbo and maybe buying my buddies megasquirt kit off his miata if it will work that is....

#188673 No worries I was just playin' with you.

Are those OEM head bolts I see? *E-wrist slap* get some ARP head studs boy ... cheap turbo insurance ... cheaper than having to replace head gaskets anyway.

Looks like you are off to a good start, I can't wait to see how this develops. I'm particularly interested in seeing how megasquirt works out on a honda. I've heard of it used on VWs and such, but this is the first time I've heard of anyone using it for a honda. Hope everything turns out well with that.

Good luck with the build.

#188677 Y8 intake manifold would work better for that head. What do you mean it doesn't look interesting? It looks a lot more meaty than the Z6 which is indistinguishable from the non VTEC.

Bigger plenum works better for turbo. Just about any aftermarket intake mani works better for turbo as well.

#188751 put the y7 valve train in a stock z6 head, block off the vtec oil passages and and save yourself a few hundred $$$ in porting..
then get a delta regrind for your y7 cam

#188795 ehh im good there ive decided this much to go this way and yea they are the z6 head bolts from the head i took off i just put them back in there i definately plan on getting a y7/8 headstud kit.....

and yea im just happy with my plans so far and ive only seen one honda on youtube on megasquirt and it ran pretty well to be honest....

but yea gotta figure out if my buddys buying my 4dr or if thatll be my d.d. and that will decrease my budget right now however that would stilll make it easy for me as it would allow me more time to rack up a even higher budget for my car....but yea we will see what happens shortly.....

#192742 So just put 200 down on my buddies O2 and mega squirt kit....and i did happen to get back in trade my skunk 2 intake manifold.....i do know the problems i had with it as its made for the ek civic not the eg chasis as when i had it installed of coarse it leaked around the coolant tube but more importantly it hit the prop valve in my car now im thinking of redoing all my brake lines and fuel lines anyhow so hopefully that wont be too much of a problem i can move some things and allow it to fit....but i am still unsure if i really want to use it we will see what happens but woot finally getting started and hopefully im getting 1300 for that 4dr i have which isnt bad considering the work and effort i put into it so that should all go into my car in either engine wise or chasis suspension wise....but still unsure at this point if i should invest in a cam as of right now or hold off and see how things go...

#197874 Update 5-30-10

Like most of my projects i must place this one on hold i will most likely be investing in something a bit more unusual but not unheard of lol...

DOHC ZC yea yea talk down about it all you want but i feel like the dohc zc would make things a bit more interesting lol....and the fact that i will be running the motor n/a on megasquirt since i dont car to find out where i can get a P29 ecu etc etc lol and since i can pick one up for 500ish motor and trans about 2.5hrs away i think i might go for this so i can concentrate on building up my cars suspension and making it the way i want it to be....and then once i get enough money turbo it or while driving this dohc zc build up a sohc or maybe ill go a different route entirely but we will see in the end i think getting a dohc zc will be a nice change of pace its already set my mind at ease not thinking about how im gonig to budget because i cannot put a price on my car ill spend every cent in my being to fix her up lol....so with that for now this thread shall not be updated by me until further notice....
