Idling at 2100rpms?

- Fri Apr 22, 2011 12:02 am #251636 So about a week ago my throttle was Sticking open at about 4000rpms till I tapped the gas and it would return to 900rpms, I bought some throttle body cleaner thinking possibly the butterfly was sticking open on the sides. Worked great and did not do it anymore which brings me to my new problom...

3 days ago my car decided it was goig to jump it's idle up to 2100rpms and I can't figure out why it did this on it's own? If I'm sitting still it sits at 2100, if I'm rolling with the clutch in it fluctuates from 2100 to 1100 like an open PCV valve?
Also when it's idling if I give it a tiny shot of gas (like maybe 100rpms) and let off it drops to 1100 and shoots back up to 2100?

Could this be from the throttle body cleaner?, if not what could it be? :?

- Fri Apr 22, 2011 3:37 pm #251748 Try cleaning your IACV and check your FITV as well. I like to start with the cheapest solutions first and cleaning/checking those is free. Also check the idle screw, it could be in the wrong spot.

Check dizzy cap, rotor and spark plugs. I'm not sure if faults there could contribute to a high idle, but it's work taking a look at them.

- Fri Apr 22, 2011 4:15 pm #251753 I just bought plugs yesterday and am going to put them in today, as for the idle screw i was thinking about that but Im worried that if I adjust it back to 1000 and it fixes itself that it will be trying to idle at like 100 and keep stalling out :thumbdown:

- Fri Apr 22, 2011 4:45 pm #251757 Mine was doing a similar thing. Since my headgasket went too, the reason for the poor idling, was the intake gasket wasn't seated correctly. The guys who built my engine didn't do a 'great' job.

- Fri Apr 22, 2011 5:38 pm #251764 Ive never had to replace the head gasket and as for the intake gasket I can't see it just slipping outta place when it squeezed in there?

The weird thing is that before all this the car ran amazing, it's a low milage engine and it ran amazing before the storing for the winter reeked havoc on it haha

The dizzy died and I just changed it like a month ago (the day I took it out of storage) but it had been doing this lightly before I even put it away last winter

Regarding the intake gasket, you won't see if it's the problem unless you take the intake manifold away from the head, then you'll be able to visually see if there was a cause for concern. Not suggesting you should do this straight away before trying to see if it's something else first.

I didn't realise that was my problem until I took my head to get skimmed and the intake gasket was still attached to the head (I didn't realise) and the guy noticed it straight away. It was as if it was pulled away from the intake opening. Probably happened from the guys not tightening the nuts correctly.

Straight away he said, "Bet your engine has been idling high and running rough." Apparently if left, it could blow a hole in the piston(s), which ever cylinder(s) it's affecting.

- Sat Apr 23, 2011 2:42 pm #251947 When you replaced the dizzy did you make sure the timing was right? If the dizzy isn't in the right place it could alter the idle.

- Mon Apr 25, 2011 10:27 pm #252299 Fast Idle Valve. Take your intake off, look into the throttle body witht eh car running place your finger on the lower hole. if the idle returns to normal you have found your problem!!! FITV!!

Since it's old it might happen again.. if ti does it's time for a new one $53 at the honda dealer..
