D15, D16, D17 and Mini-Me swaps
By mi_da_dc_eg
#60131 As most of you know I have a 93 Del Sol S with A JDM D15B, I thought about putting a D16 Head on it but is it worth it or no? I want a vtec head but cant seem to find anyone to trade me one. I am just curious.

#60137 d15b is a 1.5l non-vtec, am I right? If so, then that's just the same as my engine right now, I'm gonna do the mini-me and I'd say it is worth it if you want power to come in cheap. But that's just my opinion. THere's nothing wrong in gaining the 20hp from the vtec head. :thumb:

The JDM d15b is very similar to the D16z6. It has Vtec, The Insides are very similar to the D16z6. The main Difference is its only 1.5 Liters instead of 1.6.

If you already have a JDM d15b(obd1) Dont swap any heads unless its for a JDM d15b(obd2) with Vtec-E and Vtec.

If you are looking for more power, I recommend I/H/E Until you can afford a Turbo Kit. If you want less then 200hp you can run on stock engine parts. If you want more power you will need Forged Rods at the least.

#60171 see I have a D15B block but the head must be D15B7 cause its non-vtec. I just got the car. I am looking to make it vtec like its suppose to be. I already have I/H/E and more.

oh, Well in that case I recommend putting a vtec head on it. If you can get one I recommend the OBD2 JDM D15B Vtec-E and Vtec head(with ecu). if you cant get that get a z6 or y8 head and Ex/Si ECU.

#60177 A z6 or y8 head would be the easiest heads to get your hands on and be the best for easy power. You will also need a P28 ecu.

Yeah, but unfortunately, mine is a USDM d15b7. That's why I bought a z6 head, can't put it all together yet 'coz still some parts I need. But thatnks for the info. 8)

#60212 The displacement is in the block, (the pistons), not the head. The JDM D15B VTEC head is identical to a D16Z6 head. If you have a non VTEC JDM head, then you can pick up 30 crank hp by swapping to a VTEC head. You should definitely go with an OBD1 head if your car is OBD1 and you're using a P28. The ignition timing is very different on the OBD1 and OBD2 heads so using a P28 on an OBD2 is workable but less than optimal. Also, you'll have problems with the throttle cable, charcoal canister, IACV, and you'll have to extend your IAT sensor wiring.

Be sure to get a Z6/Z1 distributor to go with the OBD1 VTEC head.

My d15b is OBD1 :?

the OBD2 D15b(aka D15z7) has Vtec and Vtec-E. The OBD1 D15b only has Vtec, It basically has a D16z6 head. The OBD2 ECU Pulls much harder then the OBD1 version.

For an easy mini-me, Just swap on a D16z6 or y8 Head like has been suggest already. We have a DIY Article on doing it.

For the ECU Run a P28, or if you can get a Chipped ECU for cheap thats a good way to go. Most Tuning shops locally don't charge for putting a base map on a Chip. However a Good Tune is always a Plus.
