Yeah I tried to tell him, the only way to raise the compression significantly is by changing the pistons (or as you suggested, certain mini-me's give you a combination of pistons and combustion chamber that are high compression). Shaving your head/block is only worth it if it needs it. If it's warped. You don't gain enough compression to notice a difference. Same with a thinner headgasket. And btw, thinner headgasket and shaving the head have the effect of making your timing belt too long.
But I guess if you don't like the answer, just ignore it and learn the hard way.
