I bought an engine of craigslist. However their is a risk of buying a bad engine when you do this. I personally got a bad engine and had to rebuild mine. You can see what I went through in my Sedans build thread.
If you Decide to go on Craigslist, Which i wont recommend, You can expect to pay 600-800. If you get a Engine off Craigslist you will also need its ECU(p28) and Transmission. On the side next to the differential it should have "b000" stamped on it. Make sure to look over everything carefully if you go this route.
Getting a 92-95 "ZC VTEC"(Basically a D16z6 in Japan) or JDM D15B VTEC(Dont get the VTEC-E Version.) Will net you a Very Similar engine to the D16z6. Both are JDM(Japanase Domestic Market) Engines and should have 30-35k on them. You can get them from any Engine import shop. If your import shop is incompetent like my local import shop, You can by them online on Sites like
hmotorsonline and
TigerJapanese, Both sell their d15b VTEC for $550 + Shipping. Transmissions are additional and you will want them. The JDM d15b VTEC comes with an optional LSD Transmission, If you can you want to get that.
Despite weither you get a D16z6, ZC VTEC,or JDM d15b, You need to wire VTEC. Its not hard and there are walkthroughs in our
DIY Section on building a
Mini-me, It explains how to hook up your VTEC Wiring. Chances are the engine you get will come with a Wiring harness and this already hooked up.
