ok for starters, cx motors really suck, not to mention mine needs rings. and i want to swap out the motor. the d15 in my 95 dx sedan, is a hell of a strong motor and runs like a freaking champ, but i was thinking of getting a d16 for my hatch, and give vtec a try, i can probably get one from a junkyard for under 200, they had two there, one in a ex coupe, and the other in a ex sedan. they both are automatic (not sure if that makes a difference) im not sure if i should keep my cx transmission or not, im not sure if its shorter or longer than say my dx tranny. i know the ex tranny is longer than the dx, but the cars with d16's are auto (go figure) so if i go and pull one of these d16 motors what else should i grab while im there to make the swap easier, what would make it easier to pull the motor out ( i've never had one out before) and how hard would it be to swap the auto setup motor for use with a mt? i'm thinking i would have to change the flywheel prolly, and fit the clutch to it right? sorry if i sound dense i'v just never had to get this deep into a car before lol.

The auto D16z6 engine will be the same as a manual one. The EX manual trans is actually shorter than the DX one. The CX has very long gears though... the Z6 mated to your DX tranny will be a little better. But still nothing like the EX or Si tranny.

To get the motor to mate to a manual trans, you will need the Manual flywheel bolts, flywheel, pilot bearing. You should have all that on your D15b7, but replace the pilot bearing while swapping it over and also the Release Bearing in the tranny housing. Resurface the flywheel and it is also the perfect time to replace your clutch.

If you don't have a picker, you could drop the engine through the bottom. Check the DIY thread for a How-to on that :thumb:

but wouldn't i want the longer gears of the cx tranny? i mean don't longer gears equate possible higher speeds? forgive me if i seem ignorant, so more than likely i would be better off shopping around for a d16z6 with matching transmission?

Not necessarily. Longer gears means it will take longer to get up to any given speed. Better fuel economy for sure. So it depends on what your going for. Like Teal said it will be alot quicker with an ex/si tranny.

so really tranny choice is relavant to given hp and torque, i understand, a longer tranny would only be usefull if your building a monster motor, which im not, so ill shop for a matching d16z6 motor and tranny. if any one knows of a good place to buy please let me know. thanks guys.

true, it depends what your goals are... if you are looking for better MPG, then keep the CX for sure :thumb: But if it is acceleration, then the ex or si tranny is best (ex & si tranny are almost identical ratios)

there's a sticky in the Transmission section with the gear ratios for each tranny :thumb:

nah not really concerned with mpg the hatch is light as hell, and is only going to be my summer car, my dx sedan will remain my winter car and all around driver for years to come.

make sure to grab the engine harness tool. might as well grab both and sell the under dash harness or use it to pin the vtec.
