D15, D16, D17 and Mini-Me swaps
By dankspeed
#181470 So I bought this car thinking it just needed a head gasket and now I'm finding out the head is cracked.I'm told a new head will mess up the piston rings. Is it worth it to rebuild the block and slap a rebuilt head on top or should I buy a used motor and drop that it.

Any other d series that are a direct swap?

#181472 just get a complete motor..

have you called TPR or Zerolift or any of those places to see what they had laying around?? I see D motors on CL all the time for cheap. if anything, you can get a B7 head for cheap ass hell as people often ditch them for a vtec heads.

but any 88-00 D series motor will bolt right up to your mounts/tranny. just might have to convert to OBD1 if older or newer..

#181473 well it wont mess up the rings as long as its timed right and the motors bottom end is in decent condition.....

if you can find a Z6/Y8/D15b head that would allow you to use vtec but to be honest any88-00 civic d series will be a direct bolt in. just would need to change some things depending on what you get....

88-91 and 96-2000 your wiring harness should work just should have to change the drivers side mount. and of coarse intake manifold injectors and stuff like that but yea unless you get a vtec motor i wouldnt worry about wiring harnesses or the P28 ecu or wiring in vtec,,,

#181869 I'm picking up a d15b7 longblock today or friday. Also buying a head from him as well. I'll try out the head first and if thats no good I'll drop in the motor.
A vtec d15 sounds expensive for $600. Why not just do a mini-me?
Thanks

#181878 the jdm D15B is pretty much a mini me swap right from the factory.
it has the D15 block and the Z6 head.

same stuff just not frankenstiened together.
...right?

#181924 yeah, except it has a 'special' crank and d16 rods, and 'short' pistons that yield a C/R closer to z6 (low 9's) than a b7/z6 mini-me's (mid 10's).
