Civic EG

What is the major difference between "California" cars and the ones out here on the east coast?
The reason im asking i went to the parts store today. and pretty much everyhting i was inquiring about they ask "is it a california car"? one of them being my starter and the other my Brake Master Cylinder..

is there a difference in starters for a 1993 Civic Si in Mass and one in Cali?
I really dont think so. besides some equipped with the Mitsuba units and others with NipponDenso

I know about the smog thing out thre how it's much stricter. But seriously a starter?

It might sound like a stupid question but i was just wondering.

but yes "cali" are a lil diff then the "federal" cars

the only diff bewteen them is all the emssion shit, there so effin strick here its not even funnie

they put shit in our gas that lowers emissions, but also lowers out mpg.. figure that one out..

They ask you that because they have to put it into the computer before it will let them search. The computer doesn't care what you're looking for. It's just like how a brake booster might be the same for a DX or Si, 92 or 95, but they're still going to ask you and put it in the computer. It makes sense because it's easier than memorizing which parts differ between models, and helps prevent you from getting the wrong parts.

On old Hondas like ours there is actually very little difference between CA and fed models, but there are notable exceptions. The VX for example has two completely different ECUs. The hardware is physically different. The federal model has a more aggressive tuning strategy and a wideband O2 to maximize fuel economy. Unfortunately, this increased NOx emissions past the threshold that CA allows, so Honda made a CA specific ECU and standard O2 sensor for CA VXs.

Yes we have 93 Octane out here in the east coast. if your lucky to find a sUNOCO WITH 94 OCTANE. BUT I HAVE SEEN THAT IN YEARS. .. You guys have good cars out there too. way better "Body Rust" which is closely to none. out here we have snow and salt, salt eats cars.

But wow 95,98,100 octane, pump gas? that's dope!!

For emissions out here in Massachusetts. any vehicle Model years 1995 and older do not have to have an emission test done. so that means straight pipes, no cats. the only thing they are strict on is the sound of the exhaust. as long as it's under 96 or 98 db we are all good to go.

Safety is what they care about. Airbags and SRS lights they dont care, Check engine lights they dont care. as long and the floor jack they have gets under your car to jack up and check your joints ur good. lights working high and low beam, horn and brake lights. that's it. we got it kinda easy huh?..

Actually your octane is calculated differently. 91 octane here is about 96 octane where you are.

i need to pass a smog test but the one by my house wont pass me because my eng is a d16 ughh anyone know where i can go for this near san bernadino ca

As long as all the emissions equipment was installed to the D16, it should pass smog with no issue, unless that smog shop don't like them there Japoneez cars... (I seriously had a guy tell me that)

Just look for a ratty old, run down shop that doesn't know how to or doesn't care to check the engine code. When I lived in CA I never once had anyone take a second look at my ZC. I even passed my 3 Stage VTEC w/out a second glance.

Oh but take off all the aftermarket parts unless they're 50 state legal. The stocker the car looks, the less they'll look at it.
