im looking for a 3layered head gasket for my D16z6.
am i right in thinking the D16y8 head gasket is 3 layered an i can use this on my z6. also will it raise my compression.
and if it does raise compression will i need to get anything else done ie tune etc.

Compression bump from switching a head gasket is minimal, you won't have to retune. Out of curiosity why are you looking to run a different head gasket? Why not just use an OEM gasket?
And the z6 is a three layer gasket, just sayin'.

Why don't you go with a 1 or 2 layer gasket if you want to raise compression?

ive got things mixed up i thought more layers would heighten compression, so i want less layers.
im also getting the head port an polished, thought id heighten compression abit at same time.

If you want to bump the compression I suggest milling the head instead to achieve the higher compression number. The head gasket is kind of important and when you start taking away layers you lessen it's ability to seal. What sort of compression are you trying to get? Honestly going to a thinner head gasket isn't going to net you a whole lot of compression gain, even if you somehow managed to get rid of the head gasket (thickness of 0) you would only bump your CR from 9.1:1 to 9.9:1, since you can't do that you will probably be looking at a CR closer to 9.5:1. On the other hand if you keep the stock z6 head gasket and mill off about 0.050" you will net yourself a healthy 10.2:1 CR (which, by the way, is a lot of fun). If you chose the milling route, which I would recommend, you will want to invest in an adjustable cam gear since when you start removing material from the head the timing starts getting off.
For some reference ... with a tune I made 124whp/99wtq on a d15b7 w/ a z6 head on it @ 10.2:1 CR, you should make slightly more having that extra 0.1 L in your motor.

think i might leave it for now, cant afford adjustable cam gear at moment.
just stick with a mild port and polish for now

What about installing d15b piston and rods and a y8 head gasket, shouldn't that get you in the high 11's for compression.

Honestly unless you are shooting for really big numbers (think turbo) that's not going to do you a whole lot of good. The z6 head will flow just fine up to 300 - 400 whp. The P&P is more of a supporting mod for other things, by itself it helps a little, but if you are leaving your motor stock you really aren't going to need that extra flow capacity. Now if you were going to bump the compression up and run a huge cam (or a turbo) it would do you a world of good.
