#266522 ok so here is my story:
I bought a z6 head of a guy and he had a "beatup" d16z6 block (with internals) that he wanted to throw away so he gave it to me for free.
I took it, but now I'm scared to do anything to it because my mind started to wonder and thought "what if it's stolen?"
so I was wondering if there is any way to check if a block is stolen because last thing I want to become a criminal for something I didn't do :(
Can someone help me out?
Thanks civic-eg fam!
xoxo

#266529 i think as far as that goes theres a series of numbers under the d16z6

i dont know you can just type that number down and ask the local police to look it up

#266535 What You Could do is Look on the block for the Vin where the red arrow is pointing too. It Should Say d16z6 and the under it some number write those down and ask the police if that Vin has been reported and ask around on some forums but if the Vin is Shaved Off Then yeah its Hott

#266564 If Im not mistaken, you won't be able to track the z6 through the ID number inder the engine code stamp. It wasn't until the EK chaissis where they started VIN plating the blocks. the only way is if the original owner wrote down the ID number and gave that to the reporting officer.

That sounds about right.

The cops around here can look for vin #''s, but if the car has been chopped up, there's not a whole lot they can do. If it will ease your mind, call them and ask. If there is nothing they can do, then your conscience will be clear for you to use the parts.

#266612 I always wondered what good does the ID number underneath "D16Z6" do.
it's not shaved, which is a good thing
and the only way to get it checked out is to bring the block to the police station, which posses a problem:
buying stolen property is a crime itself and I don't want to dirty my innocents with something i didnt do - which sucks

i will now depart into the porcelain room where I will think this over on my throne :thumb:

#266673 well to be honest its a good issue to have not jumping right into things but you should be fine if the block needs a rebuild then i woulda given it away as well..... its nice to think about it in the way you have that it could be stolen but truth be told i highly highly doubt it is and even if it was since its not obd2 itd be hard as heck to find the answer if anyone really wanted to since that code underneath ive checked on oe cars and well i cant tell a relation to that of the car i think thats just the production number

if you still feel uneasy about it say you came across a block outside in the trash with a free sign on it and you just wanted to double check and if it is stolen bring them to the house but very unlikely that it is

#266733 If you contact the police with a vin and the motor is stolen, it's not like they're going to charge you... I mean you went out of your way to do the right thing.

If anything they might take it and return it to the rightful owner.

From the cases I've seen in person, receiving stolen property was a charge they used when they wanted to bust someone caught with stolen property that everyone knew they stole, but the thief denied it and there wasn't solid evidence that they stole it. So they slap them a receiving stolen property charge instead because it's the second best thing they could do.

Some dude stole my amp & subs back in the day and I caught him with it a few months later & called the cops. He had a rep for breaking into cars & everyone knew he did it but he kept saying he bought it from some random buy so they could only get him on receiving stolen property.

#266751 only usdm 96 and later b and d series blocks and transmissions have VINs.
that other number is most likely a casting code and not specific to one chassis.
