d16y8 rebuild or buy new

- Wed Nov 30, 2011 4:14 am #283463 im looking at picking up a 99 civic hatch that has a rod knock. would be cheaper and easier to rebuild it or just to buy a new one from a JDM engine distributor?

and if its cheaper to rebuild, should i do a factory rebuild or do a mild performace build?

but none of those sites have a y8, and i cant decide if i just wanna go for a b-series swap right off the bat, but i dont wanna spend all of my financial aid on a freaking motor swap

the 99 civic that im looking at gettin has a d16y7 which is the throttle body on top of the intake manifold, and im looking to convert a d16y8 which your basic d-series motor.

now my question is since the y7 has the throttle body in that spot can i still swap in the y8 with out having to buy anything else (i.e. like a new engine harness or anything like that)

- Thu Dec 01, 2011 2:14 am #283555 any OBD2 D series motor (96-00) will be plug-n-play. you'll just need to get the correct ECU to run the correct fuel maps, vtec, etc.. only wiring you'll need to add will be for the Vtec :thumb:

- Thu Dec 01, 2011 2:18 am #283557 i found a full d16y8 swap including trans and ecu all the sensors and the dizzy for 600, and i just wanted to make sure that it would be an easy install and im pretty sure the y7 is vtec so i wont have to do any mods, just bolt it in.
