timing a.d.d. pimp down!

I have d15b7 in my 92si hatch. Po6 Ecu. Bought it needing to be smogged. Failed due to timing and being a bit over emissions standards and the timing being off is automatic fail. Timing was at 3 instead of 16degrees. A freind of mine, full time mech, has worked on hondas but does more euro work, did some work for me kinda teaching me.along the way.

Work done was new timing belt, new tstat, new water pump, new crank/cam seals, new valve cover gasket set installed, and valve adjustment. We went on multiple forums and made sure the proper steps were taken in order to time my engine properly.

I may be recalling it incorrectly but I am sure the steps were followed. Okay, ... Crank n cam are lined up to were they're supposed to be... Battery Neg is pulled... Dizzy is set to the middle of its range,...Neg is connected then service plug is jumped. We start the engine and check the timing... Red mark... It's quite a bit off... the only thing that moves it closer to where its supposed to be is by moving dizzy maxed out towards the firewall, and seconds after moving the dizzy I check the mark... It's literally jumping... One flash its a half inch to the left next flash its 3 centimeters from where its supposed to be then with each consecutive flash it creeps a away and when it finally stops its 5 degrees... This goes on for hours... Tried moving the belt over a tooth this way, that way and tried three different ways at least of string the timing belt up.to line up with the proper marks according to a legit Honda manual from his work...

He's been woking on cars for decades... And has no clue wtf is going on... Maybe one of the Honda specialists here has had a run in with this kind of problem ? I have a ton of hot virgins be slaves to any one that can help me out... And you that you had to blow yourself up. Hahaha.... Thanks.

make sure you have the correct timing belt. does it have a vtec head on it? d15b7 is a non vtec engine but if they did a "mini-me" swap like with the d16z6 head you would need the timing belt for the head. do you have any pics of the engine?

I didnt think the si came with any other motor than a d16z6. If you bought parts for your si they might have given you z6 parts instead of b7. And thats why your timing is off.

Z6 blew or something... po bought this car with no motor or interior... sources this motor and installed it...It's a non mini 92-95 dx motor... Ecu is po6-ao1. Just realized my idle is probably to low... Maybe 3-400rpm... It's pretty steady & isn't suffering from anything like power loss or back firing... Just the timing is unattainable? All oem parts.from the dealership. 16 valve non vtec... No power steering... No ac... Ive looked at a bunch of pics and I'm sure its the d15b7 from a eg/ej...

Nobody ever had this prob? Any Honda mechs in san Diego down to take a shot at it ?

3-400 is really freakin low idle... IACV, FITV, and maybe clean the throttle body?

Ive also heard of seafoam helping to pass smog :?

sounds like youve got a frustrating issue here

IACV, FITV has to be the idle issue now that I know that idle is way to low. Used seafoam on my bmw... Cant say it worked but i went through 2 head gaskets in a year after using it. Was it the seafoam? Can't say. I've heard of this stuff called blue sky or green sky clean air that's supposed to help pass smog... I figured out you can't.really.set.the.timing unless.idle is correct. Guess I have to.fix then give.it.one.last shot. Any one.have any idea how far off the timing would be by have a low idle?

i was having the same problem with my hatch (low idle) but mine was also stumbling if i floored the gas under 2k rpm. after a few tests we found out my dizzy was bad. at idle my dizzy was sending a very weak signal that was causing it to idle low. my tach read 0 rpm at idle. put in a new dizzy and she runs fine now.

I recently had a issue similar to this.. my idle was all jacked up.
sometimes it would run fine, sometimes it wouldnt idle at all.. it was all over the place. I replaced the whole Dizzy with a brand new one and BAM the car was fixed!
I recomend fork up the money and buy a new Dizzy.

winner winner, chicken dinner

if your timing is 'bouncing around' with the distributor secured, the distributor is very probably worn inside (go figure, after only 200,000 miles?).
you can't pass smog if your timing isn't consistant, fix this first.
then post your numbers - hc, nox, etc.........

If you were resuing the Cap and Rotor something could be bad there.
When I took mine off, It was like a murder in there.. there was green shit and other crap all over the place, plus it didnt help that it was leaking oil.

I cleaned it once and ran it for like 1500 miles and then it completly crapped out on me. idel wasnt stable, I was close to failing emissions, and well gas milage went out the door.

Replacing it will most likely help. You might be able to fid a almost new one on craigslist for half the price. Do some research and look around get a good price on it.

Hopefully thats the only problem and it fixes it for you man! :thumb:
