I have seen a couple of d series with the plastic piece that covers the cam gear off? does it hurt the cam gear or anything in that vicinity at all?

I have had mine off for years and yet to see an issue. Dirt and debris can find its way in there I guess but like I said I have had no problems.

if you get a piece of gravel or small pebble in there, your timing belt's life span will be greatly shortened. And when they go, they take the valves out with it.

You only need it off or a way to get to the cam gear if you have an adjustable gear.

Take of your rocker cover, ad anything else that holds it on. It's quite easy to see what holds it in place, and then pull it off. If you have a standard SOHC gear, to be honest you'll see that the cam gear isn't much too look at, it only until you get an adjustable gear that it looks pretty. But like teal_dx said, shortens the life of your timing belt, that's why the cover is there for protection.

Yep, it'll only look attractive when you have an aftermarket/adjustable cam gear. Dirt/debris on cam gear = not nice..

Hy! I'm sorry about stupid question. I have 1992 Honda Civic SI. Engine code is D16Z6 (It have to be VTEC), but on my valve cover is only Honda's logo. I don't have VTEC written on it like on other people D16Z6 engines.
Did Honda made D16Z6 without VTEC logo on valve cover or i have different valve cover fitted on my car? Thanks!

Maybe they just switched the original cover. 'Coz I have the same cover as yours, and mines a z6 head as well.
