D15, D16, D17 and Mini-Me swaps

#86429 hey everyone, i was wondering if anyone has done this swap before?
im about to buy my girl a 94 ex sedan(to match my ej1) for fairly cheap, with a blown z6. my gurl dusnt race(no need for a new z6) or no how to drive a stick(so she needs auto....or cvt)...plus she toats our 6mnth old around, so i wanna swap in a vtec-e for mileage reasons, but never seen/heard an 0bd1 vtec-e with an A/T...or an ecu that runs both the vtec-e and an auto trans.....so i was thinkin of the obd2,d16y5?????, with the cvt trans, and of course appropriate ecu.......is it possible?

#86434 anything is possible, but swapping in the d16y5 and cvt is going to be next to impossible. Lots of time and money, more than you'll save in fuel costs, will be required.

First, the mechanical things...
You'll need custom mounts for the tranny, in addition to finding a CVT tranny in good shape. Many of them go bad or need major maintenance. They have a start clutch that wears out and it requires taking the transmission apart to replace. The D16y5 96-00 HX was the first CVT transmission Honda sold in their cars, so they didn't perfect it on the first try.

Next you have the issue of converting to OBDII. The HX equipped with the CVT uses its own secondary ECU just for controlling all the sensors on the CVT tranny. The vehicle also has its own specific wire harness. In addition to the normal OBDII things like CKF sensor, Knock Sensor, Secondary o2, the D16y5 also has an EGR valve.

With such a wiring headache involved, I'd just buy a HX if you really want the D16y5/CVT combo, or just swap in another OBD1 D series in your coupe.

#86650 ya, i figured it'd be harder than its worth....
you know of any obd1 vtec-e ecu that can control an A/T?

or you know if i could just swap in a obd1 z1 with stock A/T....maybe run it on a chipped p28 tuned for the z1 engine??

anyone make a vtec-e mini-me?

basically i wanna find the easiest way to put a vtec-e engine and auto trans in the eg sedan.....

No, the VX never came with an auto transmission in the US. I can't speak for the rest of the world as there are so many millions of variations.

The 49 state VX ECU can't be duplicated by chipping any other ECU. It has an onboard wideband O2 controller. So you would need to use a CA VX's O2 sensor.

The D15Z1 is a difficult and costly swap because of the added wiring and the rarity of it's parts. You need an EGR controller and it's wiring, the unique O2 sensor and it's wiring, the unique exhaust manifold/cat converter. The VX's crank pulley doesn't allow for power steering.

At $600 I would get a SOHC VTEC. Either a Z6, ZC, or D15B. You can't beat plug n play. You can get 35 mpg out of it! Her EX is automatic, right? 32.
