CVT transmission into an EG8

Anyone knows if its possible to use a CVT transmission in an EG8 sedan?

Looking to replace current engine with a D15B VTEC engine, but only finding EK model D15B 3 Stage VTEC engines with CVT transmissions.

Thanks.

The only ECU that can run a cvt tranny is OBD2. Even if you did convert the car to OBD2, there's additional wiring, sensors, and even an additional ECU just for controlling the CVT.
The CVT is not a performance upgrade to there's no aftermarket to support the parts needed to convert. You will also need a custom engine mount.

I converted my EK from CVT to 5 speed http://civic-hx.6thgearadvertising.com/

so you'd be doing pretty much the opposite of that, except in an obd1 sedan. Nightmare

I see they are saying it will work. If you want to listen to them then go ahead, but I would do more research first.
I think it will be a major headache since no 92-95 OBD1 civic ever came with a CVT tranny. The 96-00 Civic was the first to come with a CVT. You would have to convert your car to OBD2 and don't forget there's an additional ECU in the driver's kick panel of the EK equipped CVT that controls the CVT tranny.

Will it bolt in with a custom passenger and tranny mounts? Yes :thumb:

But the custom wiring you will have to do to get it to function properly will be a disaster.

Again, look through this link: http://civic-hx.6thgearadvertising.com All that work was converting an EK from CVT.
You're talking about converting a 92-95 to CVT. If you are an experienced technician with electronics of these cars then you might have a chance. But even then it will be very difficult.

wow :headscratch: did you ever get that HX running right? i know it's kind of an topic but damn that looks like quite a bit of work...

Best case scenario would be if I found that Eg8 D15B VTEC engine but it's so rare here nowadays

yep, I kept the auto ecu and 4 wire o2. has CEL for using a manual tranny on an auto ecu but it runs great. I put 400-500 miles a week on it and best mpg was in the mid 40's

dang, even with a CEL? well that's sweet man, saw an HX tranny on craigslist for $150, thinking about converting my 5sp coupe :thumb:
......NOT

you drive it currently?

the cel isn't emissions related so it's not causing the engine to run in limp mode 8)
I drive it 80+ miles/day, M-F :thumb:

I'll get back into it eventually to figure out how to trick the ecu so the CEL stays off, but I have my EG to finish first.

i bet your loving that gas mileage, i didn't know that it was only emissions related that caused the limp mode, so if i take out my primary o2 sensor and it throws a CEL, then it's in limp mode, but not if it was a TPS or something?

I think TPS would too because the throttle position has to do with the outcome of the emissions. pretty much everything on the motor does in some way (air, fuel, spark, timing) Maybe I just got lucky with the cel I have :)

haha, see that's what i thought.... oh well, for the time being mine is off and pretty much always has been :thumb:

I'm guessing this is a no but I thought I'd throw it out there anyway. If I could get one of those D15B 3 Stage VTEC engines but retain my auto D15B Non VTEC engine and use that.

(Im)possible?

That is an obd 2 engine correct? If so you would need to convert your car to obd2.
You would need to use the engine and cabin harness from the obd2 car (I would think)

Any of this IS possible, just extremely difficult. If you have the time and love electrical work, then you CAN do it. But for what it takes, it would be easier to but a car with the CVT, or do a regular automatic.

Curious... what is it that makes you want a CVT so much?

Actually I don't want a CVT but as of right now those are the only options available, as in D15Bs with 3 Stage VTECs for EK models which have CVT transmissions. I'd personally want a D15B VTEC with regular transmission but that's not an option at this time.
