I was considering buying a non-vtec head from a 90-91 integra, building it up in preparation for a B18C-R block etc. I was told by some people at a few meets that the B18 type R block with the LS head is killer, is that true?

NO.
if your gonna "build" a head. definitely build a vtec head. they probably meant the other way around, LS block w/ type r head. theres a great sticky thread about the good ole' LS/VTEC. but those heads aren't cheap or easy to come by... the poor mans type r is a GSR block w/ a B16 head done up, which is quite potent.

This is another one of those time, where you shouldnt always believe people. I think they were messing with you.
If it can be done, it would be a pointless build. It would be better to just build up a B18b1 or B20 motor.

GSR block with a B16A head would net a lower compression ratio than a Type R. It would actually come closer to the LS than the ITR.
Poorman's Type R is an LS/VTEC with ITR internals, IIRC.

poor mans ITR is in fact a gsr with itr pistons and a b16a head. An LS/VTEC is just that, an ls/vtec.

Meh, I'm wrong. It's not the first time...
