Type r head LS block type r tranny?

- Tue Mar 16, 2010 5:49 pm #181615 i heard that the best head is a type r and i want a LS block because of the low compression and hopefully im going to turbo it later on and because of the low compression it will boost more and i want to get a type r tarnny because again its the best but other people told me that if i have a type r head on a LS block that it will leak oil for some reason within a couple of months or so..does any one know why this could be and how to avoid it?

- Tue Mar 16, 2010 6:20 pm #181618 your wanting to build an lsvtec, honestly you dont have to spend the money to get type r parts to get the outcome you want, type r cams are not the best for boost, you would be better off with a b16 head, and using gsr cams, as far as type r gears. you wont want the short type r gears if your going to boost, you would be better off with LS or GSR gears, and you can buy an aftermarket lsd and have that put in, or find a jdm gsr trans with lsd factory.... and using the ls block isnt the most desireable for what your wanting to do, as the rod bolts are a weak point in a ls bottom end, the parts arent made as strong as the b16 or b18c counterparts... if you want to do an lsv youd have to spend a little more on the bottem end, like rod bolts and some balancing and tweaking of parts.... as far as the head leaking, if you do an lsv the right way buying the lsv dowel pins, and a set of head studs, and use a good gasket it shouldnt leak.... honestly youd be better off to boost a straight GSR or do a poormans type R (GSR Bottom witha a b16 head and use gsr cams).... thats just my opinion for what its worth... if your gona spend the money on type r i wouldnt ditch the r bottom end for a ls...
