how hot did the temperature get? all the way to the top of the gauge?

You need to take the head off to tell if it is warped, the shop might be checking how much you trust them.

how many times did it over heat and is it smoking white?
a head can be warped quite a bit before it needs to be resurfaced no matter what a garage tells you
the haynes manual maximum head warpage is .008 wich is alot as far as im concerned
i say you just do it your self
do some research and take some time and do it your self
it shouldnt cost you more than 200 bucks if you D.I.Y

If this is your first time, definitely buy a Helms or Chilton's Manual first :thumb:

you need to lay the head on a flat surface or use a perfect straight egde and lay it across to see if it is warped and how much it is warped.

if you wanna be safe just take it to a mahcine shop. they charge like $50 or less to resurface a head. and they will be able to tell you if its warped or not

some people think it saves time and is more reliable to swap motors
and the majority of the ppl in the world think that a blown head gasket means the motor will never run again bc head gaskets are usually know to cost big bucks so ppl just junk it and get something new
i have personally bought 2 motors with blown head gaskets fixed them and they ran great
i see nothing wrong with fixing a head gasket :thumb:
