The motor has 140k miles on it, and if I replace the head gasket, chances are I'll find 10 other things that need to be replaced before I can drive safely again. I said screw it, get a new motor. This is assuming that my cylinder head is no good. Or not. anyways...

B16A2, 48k miles. $800 - Good deal?

If I do end up getting the B series motor, what exactly am I going to need? Or what should I expect?


Should I just get another D16Z6? I don't want problems after this is done as it is my daily driver.

He named off some things but I had bad reception on my phone. I just want to know if I'm heading face first into a shitstorm or what.

- Sat Feb 14, 2009 2:56 pm #96414 first off, headgaskets aren't a big deal at all... if you know you've blown it then take the 25 minutes to take off the head and have a peek inside. see what your working with. if its just the gasket, why not drain everything, change the headgasket, put it back together, put fluids in it and turn the key. you can get another gasket (make sure its the metal Si one, the other paper d gaskets are recalled) for cheap, set it on, bolt your head back on (to spec and in the proper order) and go again for a long while at like no cost.

now, regarding the b

at 800 bucks i can't see a tranny or mounts being included at that price.. and if they are you better buy. you'll probably get motor, dizzy, starter, alt.. after that you'll need;
axels
mounts
depending on motor either major or minor wiring (although not extremly difficult, it is tedious)
etc
etc

i think what it comes down to is 800 bucks would get you a nice new z6 and also pay to have it installed and running again.

800 dollars would buy yourself a new headgasket and then you you'd have 700 bucks left over to credit yourself on labour (not bad pay eh? - if only)

but if you want a little more fun, at a little bigger price, the b is not a bad idea either. its a little more in depth, and your gonna spend more money.. plan for 2000 bucks. and your down time will be a bit longer then a day to do the hg job or z6 swap...

all comes down to what you really want. if your happy with what the z6 offers and like money, well then you know the choice you gotta make

if you want a little more fun, have some money to spend, spring for the b, it'll be fun.

now, last thing, find some money to drop that thing an inch. it looks like a monster truck on those rims.. lol other then that a very nice hatch, very nice.

Thats what I needed to hear. I asked all my friends but none of them have ever done a motor swap, either that or they all drive good ole American Muscle -

I think I'll probably just get another D series motor or replace the HG.

you get DOHC and that sounds cool

head should be an easy thing to swap, but like you said, could be a ton of things wrong with it
