I had a SOHC ZC VTEC which is basically a JDM D16Z6. It was a good motor but nothing really inspiring about it. But in the next hatch I got I put a D15B. Very little difference but this motor loves to rev. Lots of fun. It has a superior rod/stroke ratio and makes the same hp and torque eventhough it's .1 less displacement. I sold my hatch but if I ever had to do it again, I'd go with the D15B VTEC unless ZC's were on sale or something.
I don't know what people mean about the parts. It's all the same parts. If the engine internals are different, I wouldn't worry about that. It's cheaper to get another JDM replacement than to do a rebuild.
