D15, D16, D17 and Mini-Me swaps

#182315 I just ran into some luck, and I'm now the proud owner of:

A D16y8 (no valve cover, dizzy, or the thingy that covers the actual cam) Supposedly had some sort of running issue before it was pulled, like a sensor or something. The head is fine.

A D15b7 Needs to be clean out (rained in) But it ran strong when it was pulled

A JDM D15B. It looks great, but the crank is bad.

I have a running D15B7 in my car now. Here's the deal. I want to rebuild the JDM D15B using the good parts from the other three motors. Completely overhaul the motor. I'm no mechanic, but my friend's dad is, and he owns a shop. He's willing to teach me how to rebuild the motor, and supervise things. So that's cool.

What should I do guys? I need ideas here. What parts (from the other two engines) should I utilize on this motor? I'm planning on using a thin head gasket, to hopefully bump the compression, and eventually, adding some juice to the mix via a 35-50 shot setup.

Some pics of the motor (the D16 is in the car, the D15B is the other one, obviously. lol) http://www.facebook.com/album.php?aid=161144&id=681816786&l=eef4184862

agreed the jdm d15b cam is supposed to be a little more agressive :thumb:

#182642 upon further inspection, The D16's block has a hung rod...

Wonnnnnderful... I can just pop the crank in from the donor D15b7 into the JDM D15B right? I really want to try and use the D15B block anyways, seeing as it has that sexy JDM block stamp, lol.

How do I clean the heads? They have all that nasty crusty oil caked on them.

- No the D15b crank should have larger dia. journals/bearings than the D15b7, I'm not 100% sure on this though.

- Take the head to a machine shop and have them hot tank it. It's about $40 and will look brand new after.

that is correct.
main journals are the same as usdm d15's
but if you reall want the 'sexy JDM stamp' you can put the b7 crank, rods, pistons in the jdm block.
recommend new, bearing rings, and a hone if you go that route
otherwise just do a mini-me and keep the other b7 bottom in case it gets all blowed up!

#182872 Oh ok, so the crank won't work unless I reuse the b7's internals too?

I can't wait to get started on the build. My non-vtec single cam is still trudging along, but it's a turd going up hills.

I've never been the proud owner of ANY vtec motor, so this is a huge deal for me.

if you mean the d15b7 crank, then yes.
if you use the y8 head, use the b7 distributor.
if you use the jdm d15b head, use the distributor that came with it.

#182991 d15b block with all the b7 internals
2 layer y8 head gasket
d15b head
mild port and polish
this will be a 10.54 to 1 compression and will be fun and perfect for nos :thumb: :thumb:

Winner! This was my line of thinking. :) Thanks for the info. According to one of my buddies, I might have to trim some of the casting from inside the JDM D15b block to get the D15b7's crank to fit properly. I don't know if this is correct, but I'm willing to find out.

Where the hell is SuspendedHatch when you need him? LOL.

#183246 Will do guys. I'll keep you all posted on progress. For now though, I'll use this as a place to ask questions I come up with. lol.
