D15, D16, D17 and Mini-Me swaps

#243972 Ok, so I bought my Sedan with a d15b7 and it had bent valves, so I took it to my mechanic and he replaced the head, the head gasket, the valve cover gaskets, the O rings and almos all the gaskets that came with my head gasket kit. After he gave it to me it lasted for two days and it lost the compression, it was kind of knocking at first and then it was barely running, the engine was running but you could barely hear it. Is like it was almost off.
So I took it back to the mechanic who said he took everything appart again and put it back together to check if he had done something wrong but he said he hadn't and he also told me the car had an electromechanic problem. He said he cleaned all the plugs and connections and now I have been driving it with respect for about a month and a half.
But, since he gave it back to me it has been smoking a little white when I start it and after It warms up it still smokes but very little. The only time when you could see a lot of smoke coming out of the muffler is when i rev up to more than 3000rpm.
Also, when I first start the car I have to let it warm up because it goes up to like 2000rpm and starts to go down as it gets warmer, but if I move the car before it gets to around 800 then the revs go up and down from 1000 to 2000.
Please let me know if you Know why it does that, what is the problem?
And also why is it smoking if I changed the head gasket and all the gaskets around the head
:?
By the way I am new to the forum and I will post pictures of my Eg which I am trying to make look nice instead of fast. Although later a swap would be great too

#244021 blueish smoke is oil, usually worn rings or valve seals. white smoke is coolant, usually a leaking head gasket.
The bouncing idle could be the IACV (Idle Air Control Valve) needing to be cleaned out. If you do a search, there's alot of threads on here about that. :thumb:
an air pocket in the coolant system can also cause the bouncy idle symptoms you described. Just bleeding the system will fix that.

#244049 Well, when I had the headgasket done, we sent the head to the machine shop and we change the valve steams. The smoke comes out in a great amount when I get into high RPMs so Im guessing I need piston rings. or could it be something else?
What would happen if I do not change the rings and just drive the car regularly not passing 3k rpms?

Also, I will clean the valve you recommended and will bleed the cooling system. or should I replace the valve?

Thanks a lot for your help.

#244064 I would try the IACV first... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tUkCCwqU3eU

Then you might as well bleed the coolant system for good measure. :thumb:

worn rings will burn oil as you described and eventually your cylinder compression will get lower which will reduce engine power.

How many miles are on your engine?

#244094 When I got the car with the bent valves it had 205,000 so I got another head and basically rebuilt it. I changed timing belt, water pump and all the gaskets as described above. And now it has like 207,500.

Once again, thanks for the help. I am almost new into Hondas, before I was into the Eclipse shit and although I like the way they look and run, those cars break easily.

#244099 Your rings are probably a little tired, along with some of the other seals. My d15 bottom end just rolled over 200K and it's smoking a bit. It's also under boost which would compound any sort of seal issue.

It sounds like your engine wasn't treated very nicely if it ended up with bent valves. It may be time for a new bottom end.

#244108 Yeah, the previous owners had never changed the timing belt nor the water pump. I hate to admit it but I will not spend any more money on this engine. I already spent a lot of money and it wasn't upgrading it. It was just repairs so Im goin to leave it like that for now until I can afford a swap.
My question is, What would happen if I do not fix that problem? I do not race the car and I do not treat it badly so...

#244235 if you run it with bad rings it will gunk up your valves and lead to loss of power
mechanically nothing should happen for a long time if your nice to it
i knew a guy who drove his honda for like 30k on bad rod bearings and it sounded god awfull but it just kept goin
