JDM RICE OR NICE?

- Mon Mar 10, 2008 2:30 am #45618 So this is probably popped up in everyones mind once or twice. I hate how REAL OEM parts are being reproduced as "JDM STYLE" parts.

Its like building a classic, The hunt for the part is a huge part of the fun. Without the HUNT theres no love for the part also if you only pay pennies for it I believe you just treat it like pennies.

People make fun of hondas with bodykits and wings cause they are cheaps parts and ugly. We refer to them as "RICERS"

Well in my opinion when you buy those "jdm style parts" you have JOINED THE NEW JDM RICER GROUP.

Just my opinion, I know I am going to see some haters on this but just want to see a overall opinions from others of what they think about this.

- Mon Mar 10, 2008 4:02 am #45631 i think a mixture of all the markets and accessories is what makes the car clean. I dont have JDM headlights but I do like the EDM/JDM corners and sidemarkers. Personally, plastic headlights are whack haha and its H4H bulb size.

- Mon Mar 10, 2008 4:09 am #45632 Yeah, I guess I don't fit. I bought JDM ED9 headlights and SiR cluster for my EF back in '99 when it wasn't popular (at least in Indiana). It's been almost a decade since that happened, and now everything that was hard to get and expensive is reproduced more cheaply. My friends always used to make fun of me "JDM this and JDM that", why would you spend so much on headlights?

Back then I was trying to copy Hyper-Rev magazines and FF-Squad, whereas now I bought window visors because the stupid car fogs up HARD when it rains because I'm chubby and I breathe a lot. I got rid of my vision-style corners because everyone has them. I'm not a JDM ricer, but I'm not paying for hardcore JDM parts; it's just not worth it. What will the next trend be? "Rat rod"-style Hondas? Leaving your parts outside to get a patina or distressing the paint?

- Mon Mar 10, 2008 4:47 am #45637 Its not the point if the car looks clean... its just the fact I remember when stanley corners cost 160 a peice, many of you young guys dont even remember that. No one even knew about the plastic no nipple headlights along with the EDM glass no nipples ones.

Its honest this stuff that bugs me, when someone buys a cheap ass mugen STYLE lip and puts the REAL Mugen badge on it.

Or someone buys a Replica BYS front bumper and than puts a REAL bys badge on it.

Also I sold some Mugen caps to some kid and than was telling kids that he bought REAL MUGEN RNR's off of me. All he did was put my caps on his rotas tho.

Its no the fake that I only think JDM parts are belong on are car, I just think the fakes ones ruin the quality and rarity of parts.

Soon someone is going to start making REPLICA BYS wings, they arleady make the lips.

I think that replicas can offer cash-strapped enthusiasts an alternative. It is a shame though when those people try to clout that they have authentic pieces, some people might know they don't, but a lot of people will believe them, whether they clout that knowingly or unknowingly.

It also makes it harder for most people to recognize true pieces and quality. You can revel in the fact that you have authentic products, so that should be at least some redemption.

It's like a lot of bullshit in the world though, you can't stop it, you can't fix it, and you can't change people's minds. Enjoy the fact that true enthusiasts will recognize it and respect you for that. I like the community here, I strongly believe that most people here share the same values when it comes to an issue like this.

A clean car is a clean car. I understand that people cant afford parts, I think what bugs me when people try to pull fakes as reals.

No matter what there is nothing we can do to change the JDM style parts, if there is a market for it. they will have it made in taiwan and sold here. I think its a SHAME.

I think you really want that part you should save and get the real deal. But some dont care and just want there car to LOOK LIKE the real deal.

I have a Spoon knock off spoiler, why? because it really does not affect the performance whether it is real or not. Yeah, I'd like the real thing but whoopty do, your 1X1 weave does not make your car faster or last any longer than my knock-off. I have knock off fogs, why? because they do the same for less than half the price of OEM/JDM ones.

I have rocked Rota's for the icy Washington winters but have since sold them because Hawaii roads don't ice over and I can rock real deals all year long.

It's okay to rock the cheap stuff in CERTAIN cases. I do not respect 100%knock off built car or even a 50% knock off built car but I also shake my head when I see 390 dollar mirrors on a 2000 dollar car.

People who can afford to build cars to the "original" JDM standard have way too much money. Most cars featured on NWP, JTuned, etc are built by the originators that have bank rolls that 99% of us will never see or w/ the help of parents that most of us don't have.
With that in mind, a car can be built on the average joe's bank roll using a FEW knock off parts and it can still demand respect as long as the parts that matter are quality, real deal shit.

and yes, claiming your fake shit to be real is grounds for a spanking. :thumbdown:

- Mon Mar 10, 2008 4:05 pm #45668 I am kinda torn....I like the JDM look and try to get the pieces that give me the look I want whether true JDM or replica....but I feel bad for my teammates who went hard to find the rare JDM stuff to make them stand out and now when we show up at shows (Like Hot Import Nights on saturday) errryone can get Rep JDM stuff and pull off the exact same look. One of our EK9 guys was telling me it took 6 months to get his JDM windows from Japan and a guy at the show said it took a week online for the reps...

The thing with REPLICA fogs they tend to short out or the bulbs go out fairly quick. I have been at ICB many times and when i am there they get a lot of phones calls about getting the real JDM fogs cause there Replicas broke on them.

True, some of the price is because you're getting that brand name on your car and it comes with a lot of respect and class. What people tend to forget is that along with the high prices comes better materials, extra care and attention to detail and quality.

The knock offs or replicas are basically geared for one thing: profit. And sure, brand names want to make a profit as well, but they have their name to protect! When you buy a replica from a no-name or off ebay, they don't care for the most part about their name, they're using someone else's hard-earned reputation and name on their products.

Some people scoff at people who buy $100 jeans, but usually my $100 jeans will last longer when taken proper care of than a $15 pair from Wal-Mart.

Had my VIS spoiler for at least 4 years and yes it could fit a little better but it does not leak and it is not a fitment that is 200 dollars worse than a Spoon/OEM fitment. No clear coat cancer or fading either. VIS does make some good stuff.

I've also had my fog lights for about the same and wiring is just that, wires. The things that could be of cheaper quality is the relays and the bulbs. Relays are cheap and so are bulbs. In the 4 years they have never blown and even if they did, I'd rather by a new set for 70 bones rather than pay at least 250 for OEM ones that can still blow or get damaged just the same.

I have the cash for an almost 500 dollar spoiler and almost 300 dollar fogs, I just choose not to waste my cash on the right to stick my nose high when the next guy w/ knockoffs rolls by.

The parts that really matter are a different story.
