Idling problems

Anyway, after working my way through sorting out various leaks its now starting, running and not leaking at all which is good!!!

Problem is, i start it and the revs go up to 3k and it fluctuates between 3k and 3.5k revs. Doesnt go any higher than that though thankfully!!!

I had to replace the TPS as the old one was mangled, i dont know if this could be causing the problem?

I cant find any obvious vacuum leaks or anything else that might cause a problem so a wee bit stuck on how to sort out the idle :?

- Wed Sep 03, 2008 12:07 am #68109 spray wd40 or something like that arround the intake manifold, TB and where ever you have gaskets. Does it ever go away? Check and make sure your Throttle cable isnt to tight and keeping the rev up that high to begin with.

Then try to reset the idle.

- Wed Sep 03, 2008 12:23 am #68113 Its defo not the throttle cable, i tripple checked that earlier today. Ill try the wd40 thing but im fairly sure there are no leaks as its all new gaskets...

How do you mean reset the idle? :oops:

- Wed Sep 03, 2008 1:39 pm #68197 Cleaned out the IACV and the FITV and put them back on, its helped a bit but its still not idling steady. Its around 2k now though so going the right direction :lol:

You should try turning your idle srew(on the throttle body) all the way down.

- Sat Sep 06, 2008 1:52 pm #68574 I gave that a try yesterday, it didnt affect the revs at all!! :(

Its stopped jumping about now, got some more air out the coolant so that helped, but its still idling way too high - sometimes up to 4k :(

- Sat Sep 06, 2008 3:26 pm #68581 You have to jumper the ECU while turning the idle screw, otherwise the ECU simply opens the IACV as you close the screw to compensate.

You should also reset the ECU when you replace the TPS.

Did you replace the throttle body gasket? Did you clean the old one off completely and not create any scratches in the surface? Did you torque the throttle body bolts to spec and in a criss-cross pattern?

Are any of your vacuum hoses hard and inflexible? Messing with them when they are hardened will often cause cracks that wouldn't otherwise appear.

Yes its a new throttlebody gasket and i spent ages carefully removing the old one - im almost 100% sure there are no leaks around the throttlebody. I torqued it up as you said aswell

All the hoses look good too but can only go round and double check them again i suppose - this is turning into a nightmare :cry:

- Sun Sep 07, 2008 5:51 pm #68720 How did this all start? How did your TPS get mangled? You didn't accidentally swap the MAP and TPS plugs did you? They're interchangeable.

Hook a multimeter up to your tps and do a few sweeps while you watch the voltage. Make sure it's within spec (Helms manual) and doesn't spike too badly.

Cleaning the old gasket off should only take a minute with the proper tools. Basically a very soft sanding attachment to an air or electric die grinder or similar tool. Comes out much better than trying to use a razor blade.

- Sun Sep 07, 2008 6:49 pm #68728 The engine was delivered on a pallette and the strapping had damaged the old TPS :( the loom was all seperate from the engine so theres a possibility i could have plugged them in back to front, ill swap them over and try it

I used a razor blade to remove the old gasket - thats why it took so long :( it didnt leave any deep scratches at all though but ill buy some carb cleaner and check around the area for leaks

I got this fixed, turned out it was the gasket between the throttlebody and inlet manifold after all - bit annoyed as its a Honda part so i expected it would be fine :roll:

Anyways its idling almost spot on now, still a bit high but by that i mean 1200 so im very happy!!
