#286060 I just recently bought a 32" High Definition Sony Bravia

When I flick through the channels here, I noticed out of the 15 channels we get, only 5 are full high definition 1080p (only movie and sports channels) which looks awesome, and the rest of them, like news, normal channels etc broadcast at 576p even though I seen they have full high definition cameras in the studio!

Why does retailers and the government encourage you to buy a High Definition TV when most of the channels only broadcast in 576p??

#286080 nothing in the states is actually broadcasted in 1080p, only 1080i. unless you guys are ahead of us in actually broadcasting it like they said they would be a couple years ago, only way to watch full hd is blu-ray, gaming, device, etc..

#286110 1080i in the states? That's odd. It's just so annoying, seeing that high defnition TVs have been out for 5+ years and tv stations are way behind!

#286131 You think that's messed up, my roommate got DishTV a while back and wanted to get HD channels but couldn't because they said his credit wasn't good enough. WTF!

#286169 That depends on what your service provider actually offers. Has nothing to do with the country or anything. What does however, is the incoming signal in Hz. So all of you with an HD tv with 120, 240 or even higher refresh rate, you are not actually operating to full capacity on that front. ALL incoming signals from ANY device is only operating at 60hz. Your PS3, XsuX, cable and satellite are all by law, limited to 60. Whis is fucking retarded and they don't tell you that shit when you buy a tv.

#286194 As more 1080p tv's are sold maybe stations will start getting on the band wagon but that could take a few years.

#286410 again the 1080 aint your biggest issue....its that incoming signal in hz. Until that gets upped we are all getting jipped! You are not nor will you be using your tv to its fullest capacity

#286527 If anyone was curious, I done a bit of searching and found some answers

"The introduction of channels replacing the previous High Definition simulcasts led to complaints that regular programming was no longer broadcast in high-definition"

"Freeview devices must be capable of receiving and decoding H.264/MPEG-4 AVC, a far less data hungry standard than current MPEG-2. The standard allows higher quality transmissions or more television channels in future, and Freeview has said that the television networks will not broadcast with this codec until the majority of the population has a device that can receive it"
