Turbo and Supercharger discussion

#169910 i have a d16z6 already in my eg. i have hbeam rods and cp pistons for a d16 puts it at CR of 9:1, log manifold and wastegate, im thinking of boosting it. BUT i also have a b16a full swap obd1(its in my ef hatch running strong) i was thinking about swapping it into my eg selling the cp"s and hbeams and buying forged internals for the b16 plus buying a hydraulic gsr tranny for the full swap then boost. i am unsure if i want to do that much work because my hp goal is only 300whp. i think 18-20psi on the d16z6 will be enough but i am unsure ? anyone have any ideas ? (take into consideration it is more work and money$$$$ to boost the b16 and swap it into the eg BUT hp numbers will be greater and itll be a dohc vtec boosted :) )

#169935 upgradeing the internals on the B16 will definately be needed since they have weak rods youd be better off getting a Ls motor, and switch heads. so you can keep the vtec and have a stronger block....

now the b16 will also take work upgrading it to obd1 as well....and get either a cable to hydro conversion or a hydro b series trans

to me nothing looks better than a sohc d16z6 turbo setup
-one i think they are more respected
-two you have most of the parts you need right now
-three i like the d series eaier to find those hydro transmissions....

Now im not sure i think you may need to get axels that are built to a higher hp tolerance since im not too sure the stock axels will work.....

also you will definately need a good tune to run that kinda psi even on the b16....the tune is everything in a turbo or na buildup....

but i mean to be honest its already in your car you already have your d series stuff set up id go d16 turbo.....(but if you dont let me know may be interested in some of those parts lol)

#169937 thanks. i have had a boosted d in the past.. definantly agree with tune axles clutch ect. jus lookn for ideas i was gonna go with d16 boost but thought itd be nice to have a boosted b16. and my b16a is already converted to obd1 even my pr3 tuned ecu is obd1 with a jumper harness in my ef. definantly would get a gsr hydro tranny cuz i have the j1 b16 4.4 final drive already(to short of gears for boost lol) was planning on selling d16 forged internals and buying b16 ones if i did swap it to.

#169947 For only 300 hp goal, Boost your D16. Plus it will give you better fuel economy, Which is important if this is your only car.

When you taste boost and want more, you should be able to get more then 300 out of your D. If you swap in a b16, its rods are only good till 300. After that you should get forged rods.

I have Similar power goals and will be boosting a B16 with a B16 LSD Transmission. Mainly as I already have the parts and its in my Toy Car I play with on the Weekend, and Other Misc Nice Days.

#169949 well i say it probaly would be nice to have a dohc motor to be honest ....

ummm do you have p/s since thatd probaly be a pain to do i think with the b series....but yea anyhow

if you did plan on selling the d series internals you may be surprized im almost certain the b series stuff will be a higher cost....i know the clutch is definately going to be higher than the d series it is at least at my local parts store....and axels will be as well but im not completely positive on that one....

but id say if you have the money and your willing to pop the motor outa your ef then i guess id go ahead and flip back to the b16 instead of the d16.....youll feel vtec more i know that but im still not certain about the strenght of that block and internals even when the rods are strengthend....i do beleive the ls motor is one of the better b-motors for boost. but yea to be honest there are pros and cons of each to turbo it yea the tune is going to probaly cost the same but id go ahead and make a list of what you want yea 300hp is a start but what else fuel mileage reliability, etc.....it may actually be better to go with the b series because already its up there in hp and you may not have to boost it as much as you would the z6 to obtain the 300hp mark....which i think would improve reliability ....

also the motor isnt the only peice in the puzzle the stuff you use to turbo your car will also play a factor in the hp numbers a t25 turbo will not suffice lol i guess a hybrid t3/t4 might get the job done btu maybe the t3 will suffice......

and intercooler wise normally the larger you get the better in a way more surface area for the air to hit and cool down that hot spooled up air and colder air =more hp etc....

you will also want to upgrade your injectors but im sure you already knew that

well ill leave you with that much info im trying to throw everythign i can think of out there to help so may be a jumbled mess idk hopefully it helps...

#170026 Just boost the D if you don't wanna spend the time/money to build up the B. Sounds like the D is already for boost and with the right turbo & components 300 WHP will be no problem :thumb:

#170039 Yeah why spend more money if you have a built D ready for boost? Who gives a crap how many cams it has if it's making 300+ whp?

#170149 lol thats what i think too but jus seeing everyone elses opinions i appreciate it. anymore ???

#172900 any thoughts on good turbo setup but doesnt cost alot for d16 ? ill be running up to 18psi.. well as high as the tuner can go on 93 pump gas :hehe: so im needing one with good hp numbers and reliability but not a fortune lol

#173024 http://www.go-autoworks-store.com/gostkit.html

Probably the cheapest "good" kit you can find.

If you want to piece together your own kit, any of these sites make great affordable manifolds, although cast will always be cheapest:

http://www.go-autoworks.com/
http://spoolinperformance.com/
http://www.rcautoworks.com/
http://www.straightlinespecialties.com/

If you're piecing together your own kit you can cut a couple hundred bucks here and there by getting cheapie BOV, intercooler, charge pipe kit, cast manifold. Everything else you got to pay to play or you're making a gamble.

Guess again. My brothers Stock as can be B16a made 413hp@20psi and 303hp@9psi with a t3/t4 57 trim stage 3 wheel garrett turbo.

To the OP, Don't look at it as how much boost you're going to run. That means nothing when you compair different turbos and their sizes. A td05 at 15psi will not flow as much as say a t3/t4 57trim on 8-9psi. For what you want, like hp wise and street use, try the garrett t3/t4 57 trim w/stage 3 wheel. they're pretty cheap, and they work amazing

thanks man. yeah most motors can go above what some people say but its all in the tune of course and how hard you drive it.. im sure at 400hp stock internals it will pop alot sooner than if you left it at 300hp lol im wantn a dependable boosted car no worrying in 3-5years if ima hafta save up for forged rods because im cruisin on stock lol im gonna look up that turbo and compare prices.. much appreciated man thanks
