#133243 First off, hello. This is my first post but I've been lurking here for a while. I have a 1992 hatch that decided to mess with my weekend. The ignition switch(cylinder) crapped out and jammed so i went out bought a new cylinder and key and had the plastic off the steering column and removed all the screws nearby and that's as far as I got I couldn't figure out a way to take the cylinder out... Help me!!! :?

tl;dr How do I take the ignition switch (cylinder... where the key goes) out?

Thanks in advance. I was getting pretty pissed off and was about to chisel the fucking thing out but decided to take a break and ask you guys :thumb:

#133249 you have to almost drop the column. there are two bolts holding the cylinder on the column. BUT, here is the kicker. The part you get a socket onto has been purposely broken off to make it harder to take off. You will have new ones with your new cylinder.

To drop the column, there are two nuts up underneather the dash, must remove the platics and the metal knee bolster thing. Once you take those two nuts off you should be able to pull the column down so that you can get to the bolts which you will have to drill out.

You can refer to my build thread about Rayne, I show some pics of me installing my new one for the second time and the column as well. been through two thetfs. So I have had the joy of replacing the column and the cylinder twice.

#133339 I read most of your thread... fucking thieves :x

Someone in your thread mentioned a DIY thread(vegascivic i think) and that's kinda what I need to do but not quite. See the ignition switch itself is fine. My problem is the key cylinder, the tumblers were worn or something... key wouldn't turn, so that's what I bought instead of the $250 complete unit. Is there a way to take the key cylinder out of the existing housing without taking the whole thing off ?

#135205 UPDATE:

I figured out how to get the cylinder out a few days ago BUT the new cylinder didn't match the one I took out and Honda doesn't sell the cylinder

So it turns out I have to buy the whole ignition switch after all which sucks but I bought it for under a bill on Ebay so thats cool I guess. Should have the car running by Friday... I'll get it washed and take pics although it's nothing special yet.

#135699 This is too late but you could have de-soldered the wires at the switch and re-soldered them to your new one.

#135737 used one is also an option. mine was used and they sold it with a brand new key.. so i have to keys for my car. 1 for doors and 1 for ignition... i was able to replace my ignition in like 30 min... there should not be that much hassel.
